Switching to a New iPhone
Getting a new iPhone is exciting — but it's the perfect moment to also clean up the photo library you've been dragging around for years. Here's how to switch cleanly.
Why Switching Is the Perfect Time to Clean Up
Most people transfer every photo from old iPhone to new iPhone without looking at any of them. That means every duplicate, every blurry shot, every screenshot from 3 years ago moves to the new device — taking up valuable storage on day one.
A new iPhone is a fresh start. Spend 30–45 minutes cleaning your library before you switch and your new device starts with a lean, curated library instead of years of photo clutter.
Pre-Switch Checklist
1. Back Up Everything First
Before touching anything, make a complete backup. You want a safety net.
- Enable iCloud Photos and wait for full sync (Settings → iCloud → Photos → check status)
- Or: connect to Mac and back up via Finder / iTunes
- Or: export to Google Photos, Amazon Photos, or an external drive
Don't skip this step. Even if you're just cleaning up photos you don't want, have a backup first.
2. Clean Your Library Before Transferring
Now that you have a backup, this is safe to do aggressively:
- Screenshots — delete all you don't need (typically hundreds)
- Burst extras — keep the best frame, delete the rest
- Blurry / dark / accidental shots — be ruthless
- Duplicate shots — keep one, delete the rest
- Old memes, forwarded images, irrelevant screenshots — gone
Use Swype Photo Cleaner to swipe through your library quickly. Most people free 10–20 GB in a single 30-minute session before switching.
3. Empty Recently Deleted
After your cleanup: Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted → Delete All. This frees the space and prevents deleted photos from transferring to the new device.
4. Verify iCloud Sync Is Complete
If using iCloud Photos to transfer to the new iPhone, make sure the sync is fully up to date before you wipe the old device. Look for the sync progress indicator at the bottom of the Photos app. If it says "X items left to upload," wait until it's done.
5. Note Your Current Storage Usage
Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Write down the total space used by Photos. After setting up the new iPhone, compare — this tells you how much you successfully transferred.
How to Transfer Photos to New iPhone
Option A — iCloud (Easiest)
If iCloud Photos is enabled, simply sign into the same Apple ID on your new iPhone. Your full library downloads automatically over Wi-Fi. No cables needed.
Option B — Quick Start (Direct Transfer)
Place old and new iPhones next to each other and follow the Quick Start setup. iOS transfers everything including your photo library directly via a local Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection. Fast and reliable.
Option C — iTunes / Finder Backup Restore
Back up old iPhone to Mac (Finder) or PC (iTunes), then restore backup to new iPhone. Transfers everything including photos. Good if you have a large library and slow internet.
After You Switch: Clean Up the Old iPhone
Once you've confirmed everything is on the new device:
- Verify photos on new iPhone match what you expected
- Sign out of iCloud on the old iPhone: Settings → [Your Name] → Sign Out
- Factory reset the old iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content
This removes your Apple ID and personal data from the old device — important before selling, trading in, or giving away.
What to Do on the New iPhone
- Confirm Photos library transferred completely (check total photo count)
- Enable iCloud Photos on new device if not already set up
- Choose your iCloud storage plan based on how much you have (see our storage size guide)
- Set a monthly reminder to run Swype Photo Cleaner — keep the new device clean from day one
