What this tool does: The iPhone Video Storage Estimator calculates the exact file size of a video based on its recording quality and length. Pick a quality — 1080p 30fps uses 130 MB/min, 4K 30fps uses 350 MB/min, 4K 60fps uses 400 MB/min, and ProRes 4K uses a huge 6 GB/min. Enter a duration in minutes and the calculator multiplies it out instantly, showing you the total size in megabytes and gigabytes. It also tells you how many videos of that exact length would fit on a 64, 128, 256, 512 GB, or 1 TB iPhone. Use it before recording long ProRes clips, planning a trip, or deciding which storage tier to buy when upgrading phones.

ProRes eats storage at an incredible rate — a 10-minute 4K ProRes clip is 60 GB. Only record ProRes when you plan to edit in Final Cut or DaVinci. For everyday recording, 4K 30fps is the sweet spot. Manage overflow with Swype Photo Cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 10-minute 4K video take on iPhone?

A 10-minute 4K video at 30fps uses approximately 3.5 GB (350 MB/min). At 60fps it’s 4 GB, and at ProRes 4K it balloons to 60 GB. The calculator above lets you adjust quality and duration to match your exact recording settings.

Why does ProRes use so much more storage?

ProRes is a professional editing codec that preserves far more image data per frame than HEVC or H.264. Apple added ProRes to iPhone 13 Pro and later specifically for filmmakers. At 4K 30fps, ProRes uses about 6 GB per minute — roughly 17 times more than standard 4K. iPhones with only 128 GB can’t record 4K ProRes at all.

How does the “usable space” column work?

iPhones reserve about 10–15 GB for iOS, apps, and system files, and we also reserve roughly 15–20% for photos, music, messages, and other content. The table shows a realistic estimate of how much video space actually remains. For a more precise breakdown, use our iPhone Storage Calculator.

Can I record lower-bitrate 4K to save space?

Yes. Go to Settings > Camera > Record Video and pick “4K at 24 fps” for the smallest 4K option (270 MB/min) or switch to “1080p at 30 fps” for dramatically smaller files (130 MB/min). You can also enable HEVC in Settings > Camera > Formats > High Efficiency to cut file sizes further.
