What this tool does: The iPhone Photo Size Estimator calculates the total storage footprint of a batch of photos on your iPhone. Pick your capture format — HEIC averages 3 MB, JPEG averages 4 MB, ProRAW at 12MP averages 25 MB, and ProRAW at 48MP averages 75 MB — then enter how many photos you have. The calculator multiplies count by average file size to give you total megabytes and gigabytes, then compares it to your iPhone’s total storage so you can see the percentage used. Use it to decide whether to switch formats before a trip, plan an import, or figure out if you need to free up space. All numbers come from real iPhone captures and update instantly as you type.

Shooting in HEIC instead of JPEG cuts your photo storage by roughly 25%. Shooting ProRAW is visually stunning but 8–25x larger. Use Swype Photo Cleaner to quickly remove duplicates and blurry shots from your camera roll.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this photo size estimator?

The averages used (HEIC 3 MB, JPEG 4 MB, ProRAW 12MP 25 MB, ProRAW 48MP 75 MB) reflect typical iPhone captures of everyday scenes. Actual file sizes vary by subject complexity: a detailed landscape with lots of color can be 30–50% larger than a flat wall. Totals are accurate within about 15% for most real-world libraries.

Why is ProRAW 48MP so much larger than HEIC?

ProRAW files preserve raw sensor data with Apple’s computational photography metadata layered on top, so they can be edited like a traditional RAW file. At 48MP on an iPhone 14 Pro or later, each file is roughly 75 MB — about 25 times bigger than a HEIC. Only shoot ProRAW for images you plan to edit seriously.

Does the percentage reflect usable storage?

No — the percentage compares your photos to the total advertised iPhone storage (e.g., 128 GB). In practice, iOS and pre-installed apps take 10–15 GB, and iPhones report storage in base-10 gigabytes. For a more realistic breakdown that subtracts iOS and apps, use our iPhone Storage Calculator.

How can I reduce the storage my photos use?

Switch to HEIC in Settings > Camera > Formats > High Efficiency, only shoot ProRAW when you need it, delete blurry duplicates and screenshots regularly, and consider enabling iCloud Photos with “Optimize iPhone Storage” turned on.
