Optimize iPhone Storage does not compress or delete anything permanently. When your device starts running low, iOS replaces the local copy of older photos and videos with a smaller version sized for your screen, and keeps the full-resolution original in iCloud. Tapping a photo re-downloads the original on demand.
The estimates above use these assumptions:
- Photos: a device-optimized copy averages roughly 8% of the original file size. A 2.5 MB HEIC becomes about 200 KB.
- Video: an optimized copy averages roughly 10% of the original, because video is downscaled in both resolution and bitrate.
- Not everything is optimized. iOS keeps recent and frequently viewed items at full resolution, so real-world savings usually land slightly below the theoretical maximum. Treat the result as an upper bound.
Apple does not publish exact optimized-copy sizes, and the real figure varies with your screen size and how aggressively iOS decides to reclaim space. These percentages reflect commonly observed ratios rather than a documented specification.
The Catch Most People Miss
Optimize iPhone Storage only works if your entire library fits in iCloud. If your library is 60 GB and you are on the free 5 GB tier, iCloud Photos cannot finish syncing, and optimization never meaningfully kicks in. That is the single most common reason people turn the setting on and see no change.
It also means the setting converts a storage problem into a subscription. If your library is 45 GB, you are choosing between paying for iCloud indefinitely or reducing the library itself. Deleting the photos you do not want is the only option that costs nothing every month.
When Optimize Storage Is the Wrong Answer
- You travel without reliable data. Optimized photos need a connection to load at full resolution. Offline, you are looking at previews.
- You edit photos on your phone. Editing forces a re-download, and heavy editing sessions can be slow and data-hungry.
- You do not want a subscription. The setting is only as good as the iCloud plan behind it.
- Your library is mostly clutter. Optimizing 4,000 near-identical shots just makes the clutter smaller. Removing it is better.

In theory it reclaims 85-92% of the space your photo library occupies, because device-optimized copies average roughly 8% of the original file size for photos and 10% for video. In practice the saving is somewhat smaller, because iOS keeps recent and frequently viewed photos at full resolution on the device. For a typical 2,547-photo HEIC library with an hour of 4K video, that is roughly 6 GB freed out of about 7 GB.
Does Optimize iPhone Storage reduce photo quality?
Not permanently. The full-resolution original is preserved in iCloud, and the smaller copy on your device is only a local stand-in. Tapping a photo re-downloads the original. The quality loss is real but temporary, and it only affects what is stored on the phone. If you lose your iCloud access or cancel the plan, however, the originals are what you would need to retrieve first.
Why did Optimize iPhone Storage not free any space?
Almost always because your library does not fit in iCloud. The setting requires iCloud Photos to hold every original, so if your library is larger than your iCloud plan, syncing never completes and optimization cannot proceed. The other common reason is that iOS only optimizes when the device is genuinely running low on space, so a half-full iPhone may show no change at all.

Enough to hold your entire photo library plus your device backup and anything else in iCloud. For most people that means the 50 GB tier at minimum, and libraries above about 150 GB need the 2 TB plan. Is it better to optimize storage or delete photos?
They solve different problems. Optimizing keeps everything and moves the cost to a monthly iCloud subscription. Deleting reduces the library permanently and costs nothing.
