What this tool does: The iCloud Upgrade Recommender takes your photo count, video count, average video length, document backup preference, and family sharing needs, then tells you which iCloud+ plan actually fits. Apple offers 5 GB free, 50 GB for $0.99/mo, 200 GB for $2.99/mo, 2 TB for $10.99/mo, 6 TB for $32.99/mo, and 12 TB for $64.99/mo. We estimate your library size using real-world averages (3 MB/HEIC photo, 0.35 GB/minute of 4K video), add overhead for documents and family sharing, then match you to the smallest plan that won’t fill up. You also get cheaper and larger alternatives so you can decide how much room to leave for growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this calculator estimate my iCloud needs?

We multiply your photo count by 3 MB (the HEIC average on modern iPhones), your video count by the average length you select at roughly 350 MB per minute of 4K 30fps, then add 8–10 GB for documents and device backups if you select that option. Family sharing adds a buffer since up to 6 people share one pool. Results are accurate within about 20%.

Is iCloud+ worth it over the free 5 GB tier?

For anyone with more than 500 photos, yes — 5 GB fills up within a few weeks of backing up a single iPhone. The 50 GB tier costs just $0.99/month and also unlocks iCloud+ features like Private Relay, Hide My Email, and HomeKit Secure Video. The 200 GB tier is usually the sweet spot for individuals who also want iPhone backups and a few years of photo growth.

Should I pay for iCloud or delete photos instead?

Both. Paying for iCloud gives you safety and room to grow, but every user has 20–40% clutter (duplicates, blurs, screenshots) that’s worth deleting before upgrading. Run Swype Photo Cleaner first — you might find you don’t need to upgrade at all, or that a smaller plan is enough.

Can family sharing really cut my iCloud costs?

Absolutely. One 2 TB plan shared across 5 family members works out to about $2.20 per person per month — far cheaper than each person paying $2.99 for 200 GB individually. Each person keeps their own private photos and files; only the total pool is shared.
