Useful iOS Settings for Photo Management

Settings > General > iPhone Storage

This screen shows you exactly how your iPhone storage is being used, broken down by app. Tap Photos to see your total photo library size. Tap any app to see options like offloading the app or reviewing documents. This is the starting point for any storage cleanup — check it before and after your cleanup session to measure your progress.

Settings > Photos > iCloud Photos

Turning on iCloud Photos syncs your entire photo library to Apple's iCloud service, making your photos accessible on all your Apple devices and backed up automatically. If you enable Optimize iPhone Storage alongside this, iOS keeps smaller device-optimized versions on your iPhone and stores full-resolution originals in iCloud, freeing significant local storage.

Settings > Photos > Optimize iPhone Storage

This setting (part of iCloud Photos) tells iOS to automatically manage your local photo storage by replacing full-resolution photos with smaller versions when your iPhone needs space. Full-resolution originals are always available from iCloud when you need them. This is one of the most effective ways to reclaim storage without permanently deleting any photos.

Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC

When you connect your iPhone to a computer, this setting controls whether photos are transferred in their original format (HEIC/HEVC) or automatically converted to the more universally compatible JPEG/H.264. If you share photos frequently with non-Apple devices or software, setting this to Automatic ensures compatibility without extra conversion steps.

Photos App > Albums > Recently Deleted

Deleted photos and videos stay in the Recently Deleted album for 30 days before iOS permanently removes them. During that window, you can recover accidentally deleted items. After a cleanup session, visit this album and tap Delete All to immediately free the storage from your recently deleted photos rather than waiting 30 days.

Photos App > Albums > Duplicates

Available in iOS 16 and later, the Duplicates album automatically finds exact and near-exact duplicate photos in your library. Merging duplicates keeps the highest-quality version and removes redundant copies. Check this album periodically, especially after importing photos from multiple sources or restoring from a backup.
