What Happens to Photos When You Reset iPhone?
By Jack Smith — Updated March 8, 2026
A factory reset permanently deletes all photos stored on the iPhone. Photos backed up to iCloud are safe in iCloud and can be restored to any iPhone. Photos not backed up anywhere are gone permanently. Always back up before resetting.
The Reset Types: Not All Are the Same
iOS has several "Reset" options in Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset. Only one wipes your photos:
- Erase All Content and Settings — Deletes everything including all photos, apps, and accounts. This is the true factory reset. Photos are gone unless backed up.
- Reset All Settings — Resets settings like Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, and accessibility options. Does NOT delete photos or apps.
- Reset Network Settings — Wipes Wi-Fi and VPN settings only. Does NOT delete photos.
- Reset Keyboard Dictionary / Home Screen Layout — Settings only. Does NOT delete photos.
When people ask about resetting their iPhone, they usually mean Erase All Content and Settings. Only this option deletes photos.
If iCloud Photos Was Enabled Before Resetting
If you had iCloud Photos enabled, your photos are synced to iCloud. The reset wipes the local device copies, but the originals remain safely in your iCloud account. After resetting and signing back into your Apple ID, re-enable iCloud Photos and your entire library will re-download. This process can take hours or days depending on library size and internet speed. Check your iCloud storage first to confirm all photos are there: visit icloud.com/photos and verify the count matches what you had.
If iCloud Photos Was NOT Enabled
If iCloud Photos was off, your photos were local-only. A factory reset permanently erases them. The only chance of recovery is if you had:
- An iCloud Backup (different from iCloud Photos — check Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup for the last backup date)
- A Mac or PC backup via Finder or iTunes made before the reset
- Photos previously shared to Google Photos, Dropbox, or another cloud service
Data recovery software is generally ineffective for modern iPhones with hardware encryption — once erased, photos are cryptographically destroyed. See our article on recovering deleted photos for what options exist.
How to Back Up Before Resetting
Always do this before factory resetting:
- iCloud backup — Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Wait for it to complete.
- Mac/PC backup — Connect iPhone via USB, open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows), and click Back Up Now.
- Photo transfer — Import photos via USB to a computer or use AirDrop to a Mac as an extra safety copy.
- Verify — After backup, check icloud.com/photos or your computer's photo library to confirm photos are there before erasing.
