What Happens to Photos If I Cancel iCloud Storage?

By Jack Smith · Updated March 8, 2026

Apple gives you a 30-day grace period after cancelling iCloud+ to download your photos. During that window your account is locked — no new uploads — but your existing library is accessible for download. After 30 days, Apple permanently deletes photos stored only in iCloud. Photos already downloaded to your device are never deleted by Apple.

The 30-Day Grace Period Explained

When your iCloud storage plan expires or you downgrade to the free 5 GB tier, Apple does not immediately delete your data. Instead, your account enters a locked state for 30 days:

Use this window to download everything important. After 30 days, Apple permanently erases data stored in iCloud — and this is not recoverable.

Which Photos Are at Risk?

The critical distinction is whether photos exist on your device or only in iCloud:

To check, go to Settings > Photos. If "Optimize iPhone Storage" is selected, many of your originals may be cloud-only. Switch to "Download and Keep Originals" and wait for all photos to download before cancelling iCloud.

How to Safely Download Your Photos Before Cancelling

Before downgrading iCloud storage, take these steps to protect your library:

  1. Go to Settings > Photos and switch to Download and Keep Originals
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi and leave your iPhone plugged in — downloading your full library can take hours or days for large collections
  3. Confirm all photos have downloaded (Settings > Photos should show no pending downloads)
  4. Back up to your Mac via Finder, or export to Google Photos, as a second copy
  5. Then cancel iCloud+

What to Do Instead of Cancelling

If the goal is to save money rather than leave iCloud entirely, consider these alternatives before cancelling:
