How to Transfer Photos Without Losing Quality?

By Jack Smith — Updated March 8, 2026

AirDrop, a USB cable to Mac or PC, and iCloud Photos all transfer photos at full original resolution — no quality loss. Avoid iMessage (MMS), WhatsApp, Instagram, and email attachments, which all apply compression that permanently degrades image quality.

Best Method: AirDrop (Apple to Apple)

AirDrop uses Bluetooth for device discovery and Wi-Fi Direct for the actual transfer — it sends the original file byte-for-byte with no compression, no conversion, and no metadata stripping. To use it: open Photos, select the photos you want to share, tap the share icon, then tap AirDrop and choose the nearby Apple device. The receiving device must have AirDrop set to "Everyone" or "Contacts Only." AirDrop preserves HEIC format, Live Photo components, ProRAW files, and all EXIF metadata including GPS location. See our guide on AirDrop photos from iPhone to Mac.

USB Cable Transfer

Connecting your iPhone to a Mac or PC via a USB cable and importing through Image Capture (Mac), Finder (Mac), or Windows Photos / File Explorer (Windows) transfers files in their original format. On Mac, you can choose to import as HEIC or auto-convert to JPEG during import — choose Keep Originals to preserve full quality. On Windows you may need to install Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store to read HEIC files natively. Read the full walkthrough in how to transfer photos from iPhone to computer.

iCloud Photos

With iCloud Photos enabled, your full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud and accessible from any device. When you download them on a Mac or PC (via iCloud.com or the iCloud for Windows app) you get the original file. The only caveat: if you've enabled Optimize iPhone Storage, your iPhone keeps smaller previews locally while the originals live in iCloud. Downloading from iCloud.com always gives you the full-res original.

Methods That Reduce Quality (Avoid These)

For lossless sharing to non-Apple users, use Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud Drive — these services store and deliver the original file.

Tip: Check Your Export Setting

In Settings → Photos, there is a Transfer to Mac or PC setting with two options: Automatic (converts HEIC to JPEG when transferring to a non-Apple device) and Keep Originals (transfers HEIC or ProRAW files as-is). For Mac users, Keep Originals preserves everything. For Windows users, Automatic may be more compatible. Learn more about HEIC format and compatibility.
