How Do I Stop iCloud from Syncing Photos?

By Jack Smith — Updated March 8, 2026

Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos and toggle off "Sync this iPhone." Before doing this, switch to "Download and Keep Originals" to ensure all full-resolution photos are stored on your device. Turning off iCloud Photos stops future uploads — it does not delete anything already in iCloud.

Step-by-Step: How to Turn Off iCloud Photo Sync

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap your name at the top (Apple ID)
  3. Tap iCloud
  4. Tap Photos
  5. Toggle off Sync this iPhone
  6. When prompted, choose Download Photos & Videos to keep originals on your device, or Keep on iCloud to leave them in the cloud only

If you choose "Keep on iCloud," your iPhone will only retain the low-res thumbnails locally. The full-resolution originals remain in iCloud and can only be accessed with an internet connection. If you ever want them back on your device, you'll need to re-enable iCloud Photos and switch to Download Originals.

What Happens to Your Photos After Turning Off Sync

Turning off iCloud Photos does NOT delete your photos from iCloud. Everything already uploaded stays in iCloud until you manually delete it from iCloud.com or another device. New photos you take after turning off sync will only be stored locally on your iPhone — they won't upload to iCloud. If you lose or break your phone, those new photos (taken after turning off sync) will be permanently gone unless you have another backup method in place.

Why People Turn Off iCloud Photo Sync

Common reasons include: iCloud storage is full and you don't want to pay for more; photos sync across shared family devices and you want privacy; you use a different service like Google Photos or Amazon Photos; you're on a limited data plan and don't want background uploads; or you're preparing your iPhone for trade-in. Whatever your reason, the steps above cleanly disable sync without data loss — as long as you download originals first if you're using Optimize Storage.

Alternative: Pause iCloud Photos Temporarily

If you want to stop syncing temporarily rather than permanently, you can pause it. Open the Photos app, tap the Library tab, then scroll to the very bottom. You should see a sync status bar — tap Pause to stop syncing for one day. This is useful if you're on cellular data or a slow connection and want to delay the upload. Syncing resumes automatically after 24 hours or when you tap Resume.

Using an Alternative Photo Backup After Disabling iCloud

Once you turn off iCloud Photos, set up an alternative backup immediately. Options include Google Photos (15 GB free, automatic background sync), Amazon Photos (unlimited for Prime members), or manual backups by transferring photos to a computer. You can also use an external storage drive for iPhone with a Lightning or USB-C adapter. Before any backup method, use Swype Photo Cleaner to trim duplicates and junk so you're only backing up what matters.
