How to Free 5GB of iPhone Storage Fast?

By Jack Smith — Updated March 8, 2026

Empty the Recently Deleted album, clear Safari cache, offload your largest unused apps, and delete old message attachments. Together these four steps commonly free 5-10 GB in under 10 minutes — no iCloud subscription required.

Step 1: Empty Recently Deleted Photos

When you delete photos they go to the Recently Deleted album and sit there for 30 days still consuming storage. This is the single fastest way to reclaim space. Open Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted, tap Select, then Delete All. Confirm the deletion. On an average iPhone this frees 1-4 GB instantly. If you have been taking lots of 4K video, it can free 10 GB or more.

To prevent this buildup in the future, use Swype Photo Cleaner to review and delete photos one by one so you only keep what you love.

Step 2: Clear Safari Cache

Safari stores every webpage, image, and script you visit in a local cache. On a heavily used iPhone this can swell to 1-3 GB. Go to Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data and confirm. This logs you out of most websites and clears browsing history, so do it when convenient. You can also clear individual website data at Settings → Safari → Advanced → Website Data if you want to preserve logins.

Step 3: Offload Unused Apps

Offloading removes the app binary but keeps your data and documents. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage and scroll down the app list sorted by size. Tap any app you haven't used recently and choose Offload App. A 500 MB game you played once frees almost 500 MB immediately. You can re-download any app from the App Store for free at any time. Enable automatic offloading at Settings → App Store → Offload Unused Apps.

See our guide on offloading vs deleting apps to understand the difference.

Step 4: Delete Old Message Attachments

Every photo, video, GIF, and voice memo sent or received in Messages is stored on your device. In group chats or active conversations, this accumulates quickly. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages. You'll see subcategories: Photos, Videos, GIFs, and Others. Tap each to review and delete. Alternatively, go to a conversation in Messages, tap the name at the top, then Photos to review media. Long-press to select and delete items.

Bonus: Delete Old iCloud Backups and Voice Memos

Old device backups stored in iCloud don't count against your iPhone storage, but large voice memos do. Go to Settings → Voice Memos to delete recordings you no longer need. For iCloud backup savings, go to Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Backups and delete backups from old devices.
