Method 1: Use the Search Tab

The Search tab (magnifying glass icon at the bottom of Photos) is the most powerful tool for finding specific old photos. You can search by:

Year — Type "2017" or "2020" to see all photos from that year
Location — Type a city name like "Barcelona" or "New York" to find photos taken there
Person — Type a name if you've labeled people in the People album
Subject — Type "dog," "beach," "sunset," or "birthday" — iOS's AI recognizes thousands of subjects
Combined search — Type "New York 2019" to narrow to a specific location and year

Search works even on photos stored in iCloud (not downloaded to device) as long as iCloud Photos is enabled.

Method 2: Scroll to Bottom of All Photos

In the Library tab, switch to All Photos view (tap the grid icon). Your photos are sorted chronologically with newest at the top. Scroll all the way to the bottom to find your oldest photos. On libraries with 50,000+ photos this can take a while to scroll manually. Faster: zoom out to the smallest grid size (pinch to zoom out) and then swipe quickly. Or use Method 3 to jump directly to a year.

Method 3: Use the Years or Months View

In the Library tab, tap Months at the top to see photos grouped by month across years. Tap Years to see collages for each year you have photos. Tap any year card to jump directly to that year's photos. This is the fastest way to browse chronologically back in time without scrolling through everything. In the Months view, scroll to the very bottom to reach your earliest month.

Method 4: Check iCloud.com

If you use iCloud Photos, visit icloud.com/photos in a browser and sign in. The web interface shows all photos sorted by date, and you can filter by year using the date picker on the left side. This is especially useful if photos aren't fully downloaded to your current iPhone — iCloud shows the full library regardless of what's cached locally.
