The Direct Answer
To sign out of iCloud on your iPhone: go to Settings > [your name] > Sign Out. This removes iCloud data from the device but your account and all data still exist in the cloud. To permanently delete your Apple ID (irreversible): visit privacy.apple.com, sign in, and request account deletion. Most people only need to sign out — permanent deletion erases all purchases, subscriptions, photos, and data forever.
Option 1: Sign Out of iCloud (Reversible)
This is what most people need. Signing out disconnects your device from iCloud without deleting anything.
- Open Settings
- Tap [your name] at the top
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out
- Enter your Apple ID password when prompted
- Choose whether to keep a copy of calendars, contacts, etc. on the device
- Tap Sign Out to confirm
After signing out, your iCloud data (photos, backups, documents) remains safely in Apple's cloud. You can sign back in anytime to restore access.
Option 2: Permanently Delete Apple ID (Irreversible)
This permanently deletes your entire Apple account and all associated data. Only do this if you are certain.
- Go to privacy.apple.com in a browser
- Sign in with your Apple ID
- Select Request to delete your account
- Review what will be deleted
- Choose a reason and confirm
- Save the deletion confirmation code (needed to cancel within 7 days)
What You Lose Permanently
- All iCloud data: photos, documents, backups, notes, contacts
- All App Store and iTunes purchases
- All subscriptions (Apple Music, iCloud+, Apple TV+, etc.)
- iMessage and FaceTime history
- Apple Pay and Apple Card access
- Access to any service requiring that Apple ID

- "Selling my iPhone" — Just sign out of iCloud (Option 1) and erase the device. No need to delete your account.
- "Want a fresh start" — Sign out, clean up your data, and sign back in. Or create a new Apple ID for a fresh account.
- "Privacy concerns" — Review your privacy settings at privacy.apple.com before deleting. Apple offers data download and privacy controls.
