The Direct Answer
Check your real iPhone storage at Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Wait 10-15 seconds for the full calculation to complete — the colored bar and app list update as iOS calculates. The bar shows categories: Apps, Photos, Media, Mail, Messages, and System Data. Below the bar, each app is listed with its total size (app + documents and data). Note that numbers may not add up perfectly because iOS calculates categories independently and temporary files fluctuate constantly.
Step-by-Step: Checking Storage
- Open Settings
- Tap General
- Tap iPhone Storage
- Wait 10-15 seconds — the storage bar and app list take time to calculate accurately
- The colored bar at the top shows your usage by category
- Below, apps are listed by size — tap any app for details
- Scroll to the bottom to see System Data and iOS sizes
Understanding the Categories
- Apps (orange): App binaries and their Documents and Data
- Photos (yellow): Your photo library including Recently Deleted
- Media (pink): Music, podcasts, and video downloads
- Mail (blue): Email attachments and cached messages
- Messages (green): iMessage conversations and attachments. See our article on photos in Messages
- System Data (gray): Caches, logs, and temporary files
- iOS (gray): The operating system itself
Why Numbers Do Not Add Up
If you add up all the app sizes listed, the total may not match the bar chart. This is normal because:
- iOS calculates the bar chart and app list independently with slight rounding differences
- Temporary files are created and deleted constantly, changing totals between calculations
- Some cached data is counted in System Data rather than under individual apps
- iCloud-optimized photos show estimated sizes that may differ from actual on-device usage
Wait a few minutes and re-open the screen for the most accurate reading.
More Accurate Storage Tools
For deeper analysis, connect your iPhone to a Mac and open Finder. Select your iPhone and the storage bar in Finder is often more accurate than the on-device Settings display because it reads the file system directly.
What to Do After Checking
Once you know what is consuming storage, take action:
