How Much Storage Does iOS 18 Need?

By Jack Smith · Updated March 8, 2026

iOS 18 requires approximately 6–7 GB of free storage to download and install. The download itself is around 3–5 GB depending on your iPhone model, but Apple needs additional temporary space to unpack and apply the update. If you're updating from a much older iOS version, you may need even more free space.

Why Does iOS Need More Space Than the Download Size?

When your iPhone downloads an iOS update, it doesn't just replace the old system files. Apple's update process works in several stages:

This is why Apple recommends having significantly more free space than the download size alone. The temporary extraction step is what catches most people off guard.

How Much Space Does iOS 18 Take After Installation?

Once installed, iOS 18 occupies roughly 7–9 GB of system storage on most iPhone models. This is comparable to iOS 17. You can check how much space iOS is using by going to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and looking at the "iOS" category at the top. Note that system data and caches are counted separately from the iOS installation itself.

What to Do If You Don't Have Enough Space

If your iPhone says you need to free up storage before updating, here are the fastest ways to reclaim space:

Can You Update iOS Without Enough Storage?

Yes — you have two alternatives. First, you can update through a Mac or PC using Finder (macOS) or iTunes (Windows). When updating via computer, the update file is stored on your computer instead of your iPhone, so you need far less free space on the phone itself. Second, iOS will sometimes offer to temporarily remove apps to make room for the update, then reinstall them automatically afterward. This option appears when you're close to having enough space but not quite there.

iOS 18 Point Updates and Storage

Point updates like iOS 18.1, 18.2, 18.3, and 18.4 are significantly smaller than the full iOS 18 update — typically 1–3 GB. These incremental updates require less free space because they only modify changed files rather than replacing the entire operating system. Keeping up with point updates is easier on storage than skipping several versions and doing a large jump later.
