How Long Do Deleted Photos Stay on iPhone?

By Jack Smith · Updated March 8, 2026

Deleted photos sit in the Recently Deleted album for exactly 30 days, then are permanently and automatically erased. During those 30 days the photos still take up the same storage space. You can empty Recently Deleted manually at any time — go to Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted > Delete All — to reclaim that space immediately.

How Recently Deleted Works

When you delete a photo or video from your iPhone, it doesn't disappear immediately. iOS moves it to the Recently Deleted album (found under Photos > Albums > Utilities). This is a safety net that lets you recover accidental deletions within 30 days.

Each item in Recently Deleted shows how many days remain before it's permanently erased. Items deleted today show "29 days left." Items about to be automatically purged show "1 day left." After 30 days, iOS silently and permanently erases them — no confirmation prompt, no recovery option.

Does Recently Deleted Still Use Storage?

Yes — this is one of the most common reasons iPhones appear to run out of storage unexpectedly. Photos in Recently Deleted consume the exact same amount of storage as they did in your camera roll. If you deleted 500 photos totaling 2 GB, those 2 GB remain occupied until you manually empty Recently Deleted or the 30-day timer expires.

This is why you might delete a large batch of photos and see no change in available storage. The fix is simple: after deleting photos, always go to Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted and tap Delete All.

Can You Recover Photos After 30 Days?

Once the 30-day window passes, photos are gone from the device. However, there are a few potential recovery paths:
