Can You Expand iPhone Storage?
By Jack Smith · Updated March 8, 2026
You cannot expand iPhone internal storage — there is no microSD card slot. However, iPhone 15 and 16 models with USB-C can connect external flash drives directly via the Files app. iCloud+ plans starting at $0.99/month for 50 GB also effectively extend your photo and file storage. Older Lightning iPhones can use MFi-certified Lightning flash drives or iCloud.
Why iPhone Has No Expandable Storage
Apple has never included a microSD card slot on any iPhone model. This is a deliberate design choice: Apple prioritizes the thin form factor, water resistance sealing, and tight hardware-software integration. Internal NAND flash storage on iPhone is significantly faster than most microSD cards, which is why the camera, apps, and system all feel snappy.
The trade-off is that you must choose your storage tier at purchase. Upgrading internal storage after the fact is not possible — Apple does not offer any service to increase on-device storage.
USB-C External Drives (iPhone 15 and 16)
Since iPhone 15, Apple switched from Lightning to USB-C, which opens up a much wider range of external drive compatibility:
- Connect any standard USB-C flash drive or SSD directly to your iPhone
- Access and manage files via the Files app
- Transfer photos directly using the Photos app > Import feature
- iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro support USB 3 speeds (up to 10 Gbps) for fast transfers
Popular options include the SanDisk iXpand, Samsung T7 Shield (with USB-C adapter), and WD My Passport. See our guide to the best external storage for iPhone in 2026 for tested recommendations.
iCloud Storage: The Software Expansion Option
iCloud+ effectively extends your usable photo storage without any physical hardware. With Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution photos live in iCloud while your iPhone keeps small previews — freeing gigabytes of on-device space while keeping your full library accessible via Wi-Fi or LTE.
iCloud+ pricing:
- 50 GB — $0.99/month
- 200 GB — $2.99/month (shareable with family)
- 2 TB — $9.99/month (shareable with family)

Lightning iPhone Options (iPhone 14 and Earlier)
If you have a Lightning iPhone, your external drive options are more limited but still exist:
- MFi-certified Lightning drives: Brands like SanDisk and Lexar make dual-connector drives with Lightning on one end and USB-A/C on the other
- Wireless drives: Some drives create a local Wi-Fi hotspot your iPhone connects to for wireless file access
- iCloud: The most seamless option regardless of connector type
The Smartest Solution: Delete Photos You Don't Need
Before spending on external hardware or cloud subscriptions, it's worth reviewing your camera roll. Most people have thousands of blurry shots, duplicates, and screenshots they've never looked at again. Deleting just the photos you don't need can recover gigabytes instantly — no hardware required.
Swype Photo Cleaner makes this fast: swipe right to keep, left to delete. Most users free 3–8 GB in under 10 minutes.
