Can Two iPhones Share the Same Photo Library?

By Jack Smith — Updated March 8, 2026

Yes. iCloud Shared Photo Library (iOS 16.1+) lets up to 6 people share one library where everyone can add, edit, and delete photos. The library counts against the creator's iCloud storage. Each person also keeps their own personal library.

What Is iCloud Shared Photo Library?

Introduced in iOS 16.1, iCloud Shared Photo Library is a collaborative photo album where up to six participants have full contributor access. Unlike regular iCloud Photos which mirrors your personal library across your own devices, a Shared Photo Library is a separate library that multiple Apple IDs can access simultaneously. All contributors can add photos, edit them, add favorites, create albums within the shared library, and delete photos. It is designed primarily for couples and families who want a unified photo collection.

Our detailed guide on iCloud Shared Photo Library covers setup and tips in depth.

How to Set Up a Shared Library

  1. Go to Settings → Photos → Shared Library.
  2. Tap Set Up Shared Library and follow the prompts.
  3. Invite up to 5 other people by entering their Apple IDs or phone numbers.
  4. Choose whether to move existing photos to the shared library, or start fresh.
  5. Invited participants accept via a notification and choose to join.

Once set up, you can switch between your Personal Library and Shared Library using the toggle at the top of the Photos app.

Storage: Who Pays?

The shared library's photos count against the iCloud storage of the person who created it. Participants who contribute photos have those photos moved to the creator's iCloud storage — it no longer counts against their own. This means the creator may need a larger iCloud plan (200 GB or 2 TB) to accommodate contributions from all members. iCloud+ plans start at $0.99/month for 50 GB and go up to $9.99/month for 2 TB. Use our iCloud cost calculator to estimate what plan fits your needs.

Shared Library vs Shared Albums: What's the Difference?

Shared Albums (the older feature) let you share specific albums with others, but contributors can only add photos to those albums — they cannot edit or delete each other's photos, and Shared Album photos do not appear in the main library. Shared Photo Library is a full collaborative library where all contributors have equal edit access and photos appear in one unified timeline. For most families, Shared Photo Library is the better choice.
