Can I Use External Storage with iPhone?
By Jack Smith — Updated March 8, 2026
Yes. iPhone 15 and newer (USB-C) connect directly to external flash drives and SSDs. Older Lightning iPhones need Apple's Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. Files are accessed through the Files app and photos can be imported directly to the Photos app.
iPhone 15+ (USB-C): Direct Connection
Starting with iPhone 15, Apple switched to USB-C. This means you can plug any USB-C flash drive or portable SSD directly into your iPhone with no adapter needed. iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max support USB 3 speeds (up to 10 Gbps), making transfers very fast for large video files. iPhone 15 (standard) supports USB 2 speeds via USB-C (slower but still functional). Popular drives for iPhone 15+: Samsung T7 SSD, SanDisk Extreme SSD, LaCie Rugged SSD. Access files via the Files app. To import photos from a card reader, use a USB-C SD card reader and open the Photos app — iOS will offer to import directly.
iPhone 14 and Earlier (Lightning): Adapter Needed
Lightning iPhones need Apple's Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter ($39) to connect standard USB drives. This adapter provides a USB-A port and a Lightning power passthrough. The drive must be formatted as FAT32, exFAT, or APFS. Alternatively, some manufacturers make MFi-certified drives with built-in Lightning connectors on one end and USB-A or USB-C on the other — brands like Sandisk iXpand offer this. These plug directly into Lightning without an adapter and are powered by the phone.
How to Transfer Photos to an External Drive
- Connect the drive (directly or via adapter).
- Open the Files app and tap your external drive under Locations.
- Tap the three dots in the top right and choose Import.
- Navigate to your photos (or browse Photos directly) and select what to import.
- Alternatively, open Photos, select photos, tap Share, tap Save to Files, then choose your external drive as the destination.
