Can I Lock Individual Photos on iPhone?

By Jack Smith — Updated March 8, 2026

iPhone has no per-photo lock feature. Your best built-in options are the Hidden album (Face ID/Touch ID protected since iOS 16) or saving photos inside a locked Note. Third-party vault apps provide stronger password protection with additional features.

Option 1: Hidden Album (Best Built-In Solution)

The Hidden album in Photos keeps photos out of your main library and requires Face ID or Touch ID to open. To hide a photo: long-press it → tap Hide. The photo moves to Photos → Albums → Hidden. Since iOS 16, this album is locked behind biometrics by default. Before iOS 16, it was visible to anyone browsing your albums — an important distinction if you're on an older iOS version. To confirm the Hidden album is locked, go to Settings → Photos and ensure Show Hidden Album is toggled off (the album only opens via Face ID even when this is on). Option 2: Lock Photos Inside Notes

The Notes app supports locking individual notes behind Face ID or a custom password. To use this for photos: create a new note, tap the photo icon to attach your photos, then long-press the note and tap Lock Note. Locked notes require Face ID or your Notes password to open. The downside: photos stored here don't appear in Photos and aren't searchable by the system. This is better for occasional sensitive documents than for a large private photo collection.

Option 3: Third-Party Photo Vault Apps

Apps like Private Photo Vault, Keepsafe, and Vault offer dedicated encrypted storage for photos. They typically allow you to import photos from your camera roll into the vault (and optionally delete the originals), protect access with a PIN, password, or Face ID, and offer decoy passwords that show fake content. These apps are the strongest option for maximum privacy but keep in mind that photos inside third-party apps are generally not searchable by Spotlight or backed up by iCloud Photos unless the app specifically supports it.

Understanding iPhone Privacy Limits

Even with the Hidden album, your photos exist in your main Photos library and iCloud. Anyone with your Apple ID password and a device with iCloud Photos enabled can access them. For truly private photos, consider:
