# How to Turn Off Photo Stream on iPhone

Searching for Photo Stream and finding nothing? You are not alone. Apple retired the feature in 2023 — here is what replaced it and how to turn off whatever is syncing your photos now.

## Quick Answer

Apple **retired My Photo Stream on July 26, 2023**. It no longer exists. What people still call "Photo Stream" today is almost always **iCloud Photos** or **Shared Albums**. To disable iCloud Photos: **Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos >** toggle off **Sync this iPhone**. To disable Shared Albums: **Settings > Photos >** toggle off **Shared Albums**.

## What Happened to My Photo Stream

My Photo Stream was a legacy feature (launched 2011) that kept the last 1,000 photos from the past 30 days synced across Apple devices, without counting against iCloud storage. On July 26, 2023, Apple ended the service. Any remaining Photo Stream photos that had not been saved locally were removed. Modern iPhones running iOS 16.1 or later no longer show the feature in Settings.

## What Is Syncing Your Photos Now

- **iCloud Photos:** Syncs your entire library to iCloud and all signed-in Apple devices. Uses iCloud storage.

- **Shared Albums:** Lets you share selected photos with specific people or via link. Does not count against iCloud storage.

- **iCloud Shared Photo Library:** A newer 2022 feature that lets multiple Apple IDs share a single photo library. Also uses iCloud storage.

## Disable iCloud Photos Sync

### 1 Open Settings

Tap your name at the top of Settings to open Apple ID.

### 2 Tap iCloud, Then Photos

Scroll down and tap **iCloud**. In the Apps Using iCloud list, tap **Photos**.

### 3 Toggle Off Sync This iPhone

Tap the **Sync this iPhone** toggle to disable it. iOS asks whether to **Download Photos & Videos** (keep full-resolution locally) or **Remove from iPhone** (local previews only, originals stay in iCloud).

## Disable Shared Albums

### 1 Open Photos Settings

Go to **Settings > Photos**.

### 2 Toggle Shared Albums Off

Scroll to **Shared Albums** and toggle it off. This hides any shared albums from the Photos app and stops new photos from syncing to them.

## Disable iCloud Shared Photo Library

### 1 Open Shared Library Settings

Go to **Settings > Photos > Shared Library**.

### 2 Leave the Shared Library

Tap **Delete Shared Library** (owner) or **Leave Shared Library** (participant). Choose whether to keep a copy of your contributions.
