How-To

How to Transfer Photos from iPhone to iPhone

Getting a new iPhone or need to move photos to another device? Five reliable methods from automatic to manual, depending on what you need.

Quick Answer

For a new iPhone setup, use Quick Start — hold both phones together and follow prompts to transfer everything automatically. For selective photo sharing, use AirDrop — select photos, tap Share, choose AirDrop. For ongoing sync, enable iCloud Photos on both iPhones signed into the same Apple ID. All methods preserve full photo quality.

Method 1: Quick Start (New iPhone Setup)

The easiest way to transfer everything — photos, apps, settings, messages — to a new iPhone.

1 Place Both iPhones Together

Turn on your new iPhone and place it next to your old iPhone. Your old iPhone shows a Set Up New iPhone prompt. Tap Continue.

2 Scan the Animation

Your new iPhone displays a swirling animation. Hold your old iPhone's camera over it to scan. Enter your old iPhone's passcode on the new device when prompted.

3 Choose Transfer Method

Select Transfer from iPhone for direct wireless transfer, or Download from iCloud if you prefer. Direct transfer is faster and does not require iCloud space. Keep both phones near each other until the transfer completes (30 min to 2 hours).

Method 2: iCloud Photos (Automatic Sync)

If both iPhones are signed into the same Apple ID with iCloud Photos enabled, all photos sync automatically.

1 Enable iCloud Photos

On both iPhones: Settings > Photos > iCloud Photos (toggle on). Make sure both are signed into the same Apple ID.

2 Wait for Sync

Photos sync automatically over WiFi. A large library may take hours or days for the initial sync. Connect to WiFi and plug in to speed it up.

Method 3: AirDrop (Selective Transfer)

Best for sending specific photos to another iPhone nearby.

1 Select and AirDrop

Open Photos, tap Select, choose the photos you want. Tap Share > AirDrop and tap the recipient's device. Full resolution, no internet needed.

Method 4: Shared Album

Create a shared album to give another person access to specific photos without transferring ownership.

  • Photos > Albums > + > New Shared Album
  • Name it and invite the other person by Apple ID
  • Add photos to the album
  • The other person can view and download from the album

Method 5: USB-C Cable Direct Transfer

For iPhone 15 and later with USB-C, you can connect two iPhones with a USB-C cable for the fastest possible transfer during Quick Start. This bypasses WiFi entirely and is significantly faster for large libraries.

Which Method to Choose: Quick Start for new iPhone setup (transfers everything). iCloud Photos for ongoing automatic sync. AirDrop for sharing specific photos with someone nearby. Shared Album for ongoing access without transferring. USB-C cable for the fastest full transfer.
Tip: Before transferring to a new iPhone, clean your photo library first. Why transfer 20,000 photos when 5,000 of them are blurry shots, old screenshots, and duplicates? Swype Photo Cleaner helps you sort through your library fast, so you only transfer what matters.
