How to Stop iCloud from Syncing Photos
Whether you want to save iCloud storage, reduce data usage, or stop photos from syncing across devices, here are your options.
Option 1: Disable iCloud Photos Completely
This permanently stops iCloud from syncing your photos. Your photos remain on your device but will no longer sync to iCloud or other Apple devices.
-
Open Settings and tap your Apple ID name
Open the Settings app and tap your name at the very top to open Apple ID settings.
-
Tap iCloud
Tap iCloud to open your iCloud settings.
-
Tap Photos and toggle off iCloud Photos
Tap Photos in the app list, then toggle off iCloud Photos.
-
Choose what happens to your photos
A dialog will appear with two options: Download Photos and Videos (downloads the full-res originals to your device before disconnecting) and Remove from iPhone (removes locally stored copies — photos remain in iCloud). Choose Download Photos and Videos to keep a local copy.
Option 2: Limit Sync to Wi-Fi Only
If you want to keep iCloud Photos enabled but prevent it from using cellular data, you can restrict uploads and downloads to Wi-Fi.
-
Open Settings and tap Photos
Open Settings and scroll down to tap Photos.
-
Turn off Cellular Data
Under iCloud Photos, toggle off Cellular Data. Photos will now only sync when connected to Wi-Fi.
Option 3: Pause Sync Temporarily
You can pause iCloud photo sync for a day without disabling it completely.
-
Open Photos and scroll to the bottom of Library
Open the Photos app, tap Library, and scroll to the very bottom. You will see an iCloud sync status bar if sync is in progress.
-
Tap Pause
Tap Pause next to the sync progress indicator. Sync will pause for 24 hours and then automatically resume.
What Happens When You Disable iCloud Photos
- Photos already on your device remain on your device
- Photos only in iCloud remain in iCloud for 30 days, then are permanently deleted
- New photos you take are no longer backed up to iCloud
- Photos are no longer accessible across your Apple devices
- iCloud storage usage decreases after the 30-day window

If I turn off iCloud Photos, will my photos be deleted?
Not immediately. When you turn off iCloud Photos, you choose to either download all originals to your device or remove local copies. Photos remain in iCloud for 30 days before being deleted from there. As long as you select Download Photos and Videos, your local copies are safe.
How do I stop iCloud from syncing photos over cellular?
Go to Settings > Photos and turn off Cellular Data. This restricts iCloud photo sync to Wi-Fi only. You can still manually view and upload photos on cellular, but automatic background sync will only happen on Wi-Fi.
Can I pause iCloud photo sync temporarily?
Yes. Open the Photos app, tap Library, and scroll to the very bottom. If iCloud is syncing, you will see a progress bar with a Pause option. Tapping Pause stops sync for 24 hours before it automatically resumes. Turning off Wi-Fi is another quick way to pause sync.
