How to Set Up iPhone Auto Backup Schedule

iPhone can back up automatically every day with iCloud Backup, or on a custom schedule using Mac Finder and third-party tools.

Quick Answer

To enable automatic iPhone backups, open Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and toggle on Back Up This iPhone. iPhone will automatically back up to iCloud once a day when it is locked, plugged into power, and connected to Wi-Fi. There is no setting to choose a specific time. For custom schedules, plug your iPhone into a Mac and enable Back up automatically when this iPhone is connected to this computer in Finder. Third-party apps like iMazing offer cron-style scheduled backups.

Method 1: iCloud Auto Backup

1 Open iCloud Backup Settings

Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. You'll see backup status and last backup time.

2 Toggle Back Up This iPhone

Toggle Back Up This iPhone on. iPhone confirms automatic backups will run when plugged in, locked, and on Wi-Fi.

3 Enable Backup Over Cellular (Optional)

Toggle Back Up Over Cellular on if you want backups even when not on Wi-Fi. Be aware this uses cellular data — may incur charges.

4 Verify iCloud Storage

Tap Manage Storage to make sure you have enough iCloud space. iPhone needs at least the size of your backup (typically 5-20 GB). Free tier is 5 GB; upgrade if needed.

Method 2: Auto Backup to Mac via Finder

5 Connect iPhone to Mac via USB

Plug your iPhone into your Mac. Open Finder and click your iPhone in the sidebar. If prompted, tap Trust This Computer on iPhone.

6 Enable Auto Backup to Mac

In Finder, scroll to the Backups section. Choose Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac. Toggle on Back up automatically when this iPhone is connected to this computer. Optionally check Encrypt local backup. Click Apply.

Schedule limitation: Apple does not provide a true scheduler. iCloud backs up "approximately once a day" when conditions are met. For exact daily/weekly scheduling, use a third-party app like iMazing on a Mac/PC that runs the backup at a fixed time.

Method 3: Third-Party Scheduled Backups

For granular scheduling:

  • iMazing: Set daily/weekly backup schedules. Triggers on USB or Wi-Fi.
  • AnyTrans: Wireless or USB backups with scheduling.
  • Dr.Fone Backup: One-click scheduled iOS backups.
