How to Set Up iCloud Photos (Step-by-Step)

iCloud Photos automatically backs up every photo and video you take and syncs them across all your Apple devices. Here is how to set it up correctly from scratch.

Quick answer: Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and toggle on iCloud Photos. Choose Optimize iPhone Storage to save local space. Photos will upload to iCloud over Wi-Fi and become accessible on all your Apple devices and at icloud.com.

Before You Enable iCloud Photos

Check these two things first:

Enable iCloud Photos on iPhone

  1. Open Settings and tap your Apple ID name

Open the Settings app. Tap your name at the top to enter Apple ID settings.

  2. Tap iCloud

Tap iCloud to see your iCloud usage and connected apps.

  3. Tap Photos

In the Apps Using iCloud list, tap Photos.

  4. Toggle on iCloud Photos

Tap the toggle next to iCloud Photos to enable it. It will turn green.

Choose the Right Storage Setting

After enabling iCloud Photos, you will see two storage options:

For most users, Optimize iPhone Storage is the better choice. It keeps your iPhone storage manageable while preserving your full-quality originals in iCloud.

The First Upload

After enabling, iCloud Photos begins uploading your entire library. This can take:

To monitor progress: open the Photos app, tap Library, and scroll to the very bottom. You will see an upload progress bar. Keep your iPhone plugged in and on Wi-Fi for the fastest upload.

Tip: If the upload seems stuck, toggle Airplane Mode on and off. This refreshes the connection and often restarts a stalled upload.

Access Photos on Other Devices

Once iCloud Photos is enabled and your library uploads, your photos are accessible everywhere:

Frequently Asked Questions

How much iCloud storage do I need for photos?

The average user with 5,000 photos needs approximately 15-25 GB of iCloud storage. Apple's free 5 GB tier is not enough for most photo libraries. The 50 GB plan ($0.99/month) works for moderate libraries. The 200 GB plan ($2.99/month) is sufficient for most heavy users.

What is the difference between Optimize Storage and Keep Originals?

Optimize iPhone Storage keeps device-optimized (smaller) copies on your iPhone and full-resolution originals in iCloud. iPhone storage stays low, but you need internet to view photos at full quality. Download and Keep Originals stores full-res files both in iCloud and on your device — full quality offline, but uses more local storage.

Can I use iCloud Photos on multiple iPhones?

Yes. iCloud Photos syncs your library across all Apple devices signed in to the same Apple ID. Any changes — new photos, edits, deletions — propagate to all devices automatically. This includes iPhones, iPads, Macs, and the web at icloud.com.
