How to Remove Location Data from iPhone Photos

Every iPhone photo contains hidden GPS coordinates in its EXIF data. Here is how to strip that location before sharing, and how to stop iPhone from tagging new photos with location.

Quick answer: When sharing a photo, tap the Share button, then tap the location tag at the top of the share sheet, and toggle off Include Location. The shared copy will have no GPS data. To stop all future photos from being tagged, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Camera > Never.

Method 1: Remove Location When Sharing a Photo

This is the easiest and most reliable way. iOS strips the location from a specific share action without permanently modifying your original photo.

  1. Open the photo in Photos

Open the Photos app and tap the photo you want to share.

  2. Tap the Share button

Tap the Share button (the box with an upward arrow) in the bottom-left corner.

  3. Find the location tag at the top

At the top of the share sheet, you will see a small map pin or location name showing where the photo was taken. Tap it.

  4. Toggle off Include Location

Tap Include Location to turn it off. It will change to show "No Location". Now proceed to share — the recipient will receive the photo with the GPS coordinates stripped.

Note: This only strips location from the shared copy. Your original photo in the Photos app retains its location data.

Method 2: Disable Location Access for Camera

To stop your iPhone from tagging any future photos with location data:

  1. Open Settings

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

  2. Go to Privacy & Security > Location Services

Tap Privacy & Security, then tap Location Services.

  3. Find Camera and tap it

Scroll down to the app list and tap Camera.

  4. Set to Never

Select Never. From this point, the Camera app cannot access your location, so new photos will not have GPS coordinates embedded.

Trade-off: Disabling camera location means your Photos app cannot sort photos by location on a map. The "Places" feature in Photos will no longer work for new photos.

What is EXIF Location Data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in every photo file. It records technical details like shutter speed, aperture, and ISO — and when location services are enabled, it also records the GPS coordinates where the photo was taken.

This location data is invisible to most viewers but accessible to anyone who checks the file's metadata. Many photo apps, websites, and tools can read EXIF data. Most major social platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X) strip EXIF automatically before publishing, but direct file sharing preserves it. See our guide to iPhone photo EXIF data for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing location data affect the photo quality?

No. Location metadata is stored separately from the image data. Stripping it does not change the photo's pixels, colors, or quality in any way. The photo looks identical — it simply no longer contains GPS coordinates in the file.

How do I stop iPhone from adding location to photos?

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera and set it to Never. New photos will not be tagged with location data. Note that the Places feature in the Photos app will stop working for new photos taken after this change.

Can someone see where I took a photo from the file?

Yes, if the file contains GPS EXIF data. Anyone who receives the original file can view the coordinates using EXIF viewers or tools. Social media platforms usually strip this automatically, but direct sharing (email, AirDrop, iMessage) preserves the original file with all metadata intact. Use the iOS share sheet location toggle to strip it before sending.
