How to Merge Two Photo Libraries on iPhone

Switching iPhones, combining family libraries, or consolidating multiple iCloud accounts? Here is how to merge photo libraries without losing anything or creating a mess of duplicates.

Quick Answer

Apple does not offer a one-click "merge libraries" feature. To combine two photo libraries, enable iCloud Photos on both devices using the same Apple ID — all photos sync into one unified library automatically. If the libraries are on different Apple IDs, use AirDrop to send all photos from one device to the other, or import via a Mac. After merging, use the Duplicates album (iOS 16+) in Photos > Albums to find and merge duplicate photos.

Method 1: Same Apple ID (iCloud Sync)

If both devices use the same Apple ID, merging is straightforward. Enable iCloud Photos on both iPhones and all photos sync into one shared library.

1 Enable iCloud Photos on Both Devices

On each iPhone, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos and toggle on iCloud Photos. Make sure both devices are signed into the same Apple ID.

2 Wait for Sync to Complete

iCloud will upload photos from both devices and merge them into one library. This can take hours to days depending on library size and internet speed. Keep both devices connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into power. You can check sync progress in Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos.

3 Clean Up Duplicates

After sync completes, open Photos > Albums and scroll down to Utilities. Tap Duplicates. iOS automatically identifies identical or near-identical photos. Tap Merge on each pair, or use Select All > Merge to clean up everything at once. Merged photos keep the highest quality version and all associated metadata.

Method 2: Different Apple IDs (AirDrop)

If the two photo libraries are on different Apple IDs, you cannot use iCloud sync. Instead, use AirDrop to transfer photos from one device to the other.

1 Open Photos on the Source iPhone

On the phone you want to transfer photos FROM, open Photos and tap Select. Choose all photos you want to move — tap Select All in the Library view to grab everything.

2 AirDrop to the Target iPhone

Tap the Share button and select AirDrop. Choose the target iPhone. For large libraries (5,000+ photos), AirDrop in batches of 1,000-2,000 to avoid failures. Keep both phones close together, awake, and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

3 Accept on the Target iPhone

On the receiving iPhone, tap Accept All. Photos will be saved to the camera roll. Large transfers (10,000+ photos) can take 30-60 minutes.

Method 3: Merge via Mac

A Mac provides the most control over merging. Download photos from both sources to your Mac, then import everything into one Photos library.

  1. Connect the first iPhone and import all photos to a Mac folder using Image Capture or the Photos app.
  2. Download photos from the second source (second iPhone, iCloud.com, or Google Photos export).
  3. Open the Photos app on Mac with your primary iCloud account. Drag and drop all photos from both folders into the Photos window.
  4. Photos imports everything and syncs to iCloud, making the merged library available on all your devices.
  5. Use Photos > Duplicates on your iPhone or Mac to clean up any duplicate entries.
Tip: After merging, your library likely contains many duplicates, blurry shots, and screenshots from both sources. Use Swype Photo Cleaner to quickly swipe through and remove unwanted photos — left to delete, right to keep.

For more information on organizing your photos after a merge, see our iPhone photo albums organization guide. If you are merging as part of switching phones, our switching to a new iPhone guide covers the full process.

Clean Up After the Merge

Merged libraries always have duplicates and clutter. Swype Photo Cleaner helps you sort through thousands of photos in minutes — swipe left to delete, right to keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I merge two iCloud Photo Libraries into one?

Yes, but Apple does not provide a one-click merge. You need to download all photos from the second iCloud account (via iCloud.com or the Photos app on Mac), then import them into the primary account. Use the Duplicates album in Photos (iOS 16+) to clean up any duplicates afterward.

Will merging photo libraries create duplicates?

Merging photo libraries often creates duplicates, especially if some photos existed in both libraries. Starting with iOS 16, the Photos app includes a built-in Duplicates album that automatically detects and lets you merge duplicate photos. After combining libraries, go to Photos > Albums > Duplicates to review and merge any identical photos.

How do I merge photo libraries when switching iPhones?

When switching to a new iPhone, the easiest approach is to use iCloud Photos. Enable iCloud Photos on both devices with the same Apple ID, and all photos from both devices sync into one unified library. If the old phone used a different Apple ID, AirDrop all photos from the old phone to the new one.
