How to Find Photos by Date on iPhone

The Photos app on iPhone has multiple ways to locate photos taken on a specific date — from quick text search to scrolling Days view.

Quick Answer

To find iPhone photos by date, open the Photos app and tap Search at the bottom. Type a date in natural language like "March 12 2024", "December 2023", or just "2022". iOS recognizes the date and instantly shows matching photos. Alternatively, tap Library > Days to scroll chronologically through every day you have photos. For broader ranges, use Months or Years view. Both methods work without internet access for photos stored locally on your iPhone.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1 Open the Photos App

Tap the Photos icon on your home screen. If you have iCloud Photos enabled, your full library will be available for search.

2 Tap Search at the Bottom

In iOS 18 and later, tap the Search tab in the bottom navigation. On older versions, tap the magnifying glass icon. The search field accepts dates, locations, people, and objects.

3 Type a Date in Natural Language

Type any date format the iPhone recognizes — for example, "March 12 2024", "December 2023", "summer 2022", or "last christmas". iOS will suggest matching dates as you type. Tap a suggestion to see results.

4 Browse Days View Instead

Alternatively, tap Library at the bottom, then choose Days at the top. Scroll up or down to find a specific date. Each day groups all photos taken that day. For broader navigation, switch to Months or Years.

5 Use Date Headers

Each section in Days and Months view has a date header at the top. Tap and drag the scrollbar on the right edge of the screen for fast scrolling through long libraries.

6 Refine with Combined Search

Combine dates with locations or people. For example, type "Paris July 2023" to find only photos from that trip, or "beach summer 2024" for vacation shots.

Tip: If a photo seems missing, check Albums > Hidden and Albums > Recently Deleted. Hidden photos are excluded from search by default in iOS 14 and later.

Advanced Date Filtering

The native iPhone Photos app does not support custom date range filters (for example, "between January 1 and February 15"). For more granular filtering, third-party apps like Slidebox or Gemini Photos offer date-based sorting. To clean up old date ranges quickly, try Swype Photo Cleaner — it groups photos chronologically so you can swipe through entire months at a time.
