How to Delete Photos from a Shared Album on iPhone

Shared Albums are completely separate from your Photos library. Deleting from one doesn't affect the other — here's everything you need to know.

Key fact: Shared Albums are separate from your main Photos library. Deleting a photo from a Shared Album does NOT delete it from your camera roll. The original stays in your library.

Delete Your Own Photo from a Shared Album

  1. Open the Photos app
  2. Tap Albums at the bottom
  3. Scroll down to Shared Albums and tap the album
  4. Tap the photo you want to remove
  5. Tap the three-dot menu (···) or share icon → tap Delete
  6. The photo is removed from the Shared Album — your original is unchanged in your library

Note: You can only delete photos you added. You cannot delete photos added by others.

Delete Multiple Photos from a Shared Album

  1. Open the Shared Album
  2. Tap Select in the top right
  3. Tap all photos you want to remove
  4. Tap the trash icon → Delete

Remove Someone Else's Photos (Album Owner Only)

As the album owner, you can remove contributors — which removes their photos from the album:

  1. Open the Shared Album
  2. Tap the People icon at the bottom
  3. Tap a subscriber's name
  4. Tap Remove — their contributions are removed from the album

Leave a Shared Album (Removes All Its Photos from Your Device)

If you want to stop seeing a shared album and remove all its photos from your device:

  1. Go to Albums → Shared Albums → tap the album
  2. Tap the People icon
  3. Scroll down and tap Unsubscribe

This removes the album and all photos others added from your device. Photos you added to the album are not affected in your personal library.

Delete an Entire Shared Album You Created

  1. Go to Albums → Shared Albums → tap the album
  2. Tap the People icon
  3. Scroll to the bottom → tap Delete Shared Album

This removes the album from all subscribers' devices. Their personal copies (if they saved any) are unaffected.

Why Deleted Shared Album Photos Keep Coming Back

If photos reappear after you delete them from a Shared Album, it's usually because:

  • Someone re-added the photo to the album
  • You deleted from your library but not from the Shared Album specifically (they're independent)
  • iCloud sync is still completing

Does deleting from a Shared Album delete from my library?

No. Shared Albums and your Photos library are completely independent. Deleting from one never affects the other.

Why can't I delete photos from a Shared Album?

You can only delete photos you contributed. To remove photos added by others, you need to remove that contributor from the album (album owners only).

How do I remove someone else's photo from a Shared Album?

Only as album owner: go to the album → People → tap the contributor → Remove. Their photos are removed from the album.
