How to Delete Instagram Cache on iPhone

Instagram can silently consume 1-5 GB or more of your iPhone storage by caching every photo, video, and Reel you scroll past. Here is how to clear that cache and reclaim your storage.

Quick Answer

Instagram does not have a built-in "clear cache" button on iPhone. The only way to clear Instagram cache is to offload or delete the app and reinstall it. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Instagram > Offload App. This removes the app and its cache (typically 1-5 GB) while preserving your login. Then reinstall from the App Store. Your account, photos, messages, and saved posts are all stored on Instagram's servers and will be restored when you log back in.

How to Check Instagram Cache Size

Before clearing anything, check how much space Instagram is actually using on your iPhone. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and scroll down to find Instagram in the app list. You will see two numbers:

  • App Size: The Instagram app itself (about 250-300 MB). This is the code that runs the app.
  • Documents & Data: This is the cache — all the images, videos, Reels, and Stories that Instagram has downloaded as you browsed. This number typically ranges from 500 MB to 5+ GB depending on your usage.

If Documents & Data is under 200 MB, clearing the cache will not recover meaningful space. If it is over 1 GB, clearing it is worthwhile.

Method 1: Offload Instagram (Recommended)

1 Open iPhone Storage Settings

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Wait a moment for the list of apps to load completely.

2 Find and Tap Instagram

Scroll down to Instagram in the list (apps are sorted by size, largest first). Tap on Instagram to see its storage details.

3 Tap Offload App

Tap Offload App, then confirm. This removes the app binary and all cached data while keeping your login credentials and settings. The app icon remains on your home screen with a small cloud icon.

4 Reinstall Instagram

Tap the Instagram icon on your home screen to reinstall, or download it fresh from the App Store. Once installed, open it — you should be logged in automatically. Instagram starts with a fresh, empty cache.

Method 2: Delete and Reinstall

If offloading does not seem to free enough space, try a full delete. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Instagram > Delete App. This removes everything, including saved login credentials. Reinstall from the App Store and log in with your username and password. This guarantees a completely clean slate.

Nothing is lost: All your Instagram content — posts, Stories, messages, saved posts, Reels, followers — is stored on Instagram's servers. Deleting the iPhone app does not affect any of it. When you reinstall and log in, everything is exactly as you left it.

How to Prevent Cache Buildup

Instagram does not offer settings to limit cache size, but you can minimize how fast it grows:

  • Reduce data usage: In Instagram, go to Settings > Account > Data Usage > enable Data Saver. This reduces the quality of images and videos that are preloaded, which slows cache growth.
  • Clear cache regularly: Set a reminder to offload Instagram every 2-3 months. It takes under a minute and keeps cache in check.
  • Watch fewer Reels: Video content is cached at much higher file sizes than photos. Heavy Reels usage is the primary driver of Instagram's cache growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does clearing Instagram cache delete my photos or messages?

No. Clearing Instagram cache does not delete your photos, messages, stories, saved posts, or account data. All of that is stored on Instagram's servers, not on your iPhone. Cache only contains temporary files like thumbnails, previews, and recently viewed content that Instagram downloads for faster loading.

Why is Instagram using so much storage on my iPhone?

Instagram caches every photo, video, Reel, and Story you view so that scrolling feels smooth and content loads instantly. Over months of daily use, this cache grows to 1-5 GB or more. Instagram does not have a built-in cache clearing option, so this data accumulates indefinitely until you manually offload or delete and reinstall the app.

How often should I clear Instagram cache?

For most users, clearing Instagram cache every 2-3 months is sufficient to keep storage usage in check. If you are a heavy Instagram user who watches many Reels and Stories daily, monthly clearing may be more appropriate. You can check how much space Instagram is using at any time in Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Instagram.
