How to Delete Apps That Won't Delete on iPhone

Tapping and holding an app but not seeing the delete option? Here are five fixes, from the most common cause to advanced troubleshooting.

Quick Answer

The #1 reason apps will not delete is Screen Time restrictions. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Deleting Apps and set it to Allow. If that is not the issue, try deleting via Settings > General > iPhone Storage, or check if the app is a built-in Apple app that cannot be fully removed. A force restart can also fix stuck apps.

Fix 1: Check Screen Time Restrictions (Most Common)

Screen Time can block app deletion entirely, which is often set by parents on children's devices — or accidentally enabled.

1 Open Screen Time Settings

Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If this is toggled on, tap it.

2 Enable App Deletion

Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases. Under Deleting Apps, change from Don't Allow to Allow. You may need to enter your Screen Time passcode. Now try deleting the app again.

Fix 2: Delete via Settings (Bypass Home Screen)

If the home screen method is not working, try the Settings approach:

1 Open iPhone Storage

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Wait for the list to load (it scans all apps).

2 Find and Delete the App

Scroll down to find the app. Tap it. Choose Delete App (removes everything) or Offload App (removes app binary but keeps data). Confirm when prompted.

Fix 3: Force Restart Your iPhone

If the app appears stuck (spinning icon, greyed out, or frozen during update), a force restart often fixes it:

  1. Press and quickly release Volume Up
  2. Press and quickly release Volume Down
  3. Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo

After restart, try deleting the app again using the long-press method or Settings.

Fix 4: Built-in Apps (Cannot Be Fully Deleted)

Some Apple apps cannot be deleted from your iPhone. These include:

  • Cannot be deleted: Phone, Messages, Safari, Camera, Photos, App Store, Settings, Clock, Health, Find My, Wallet
  • Can be deleted: Calculator, Calendar, Compass, Contacts, FaceTime, Home, Mail, Maps, Measure, Music, News, Notes, Podcasts, Reminders, Shortcuts, Stocks, Tips, TV, Voice Memos, Watch, Weather

For built-in apps you cannot delete, you can remove them from your home screen by long-pressing and choosing Remove from Home Screen. They move to the App Library.

Fix 5: App Stuck Downloading or Updating

If an app shows a progress circle or loading indicator and will not respond:

  1. Tap the app icon to pause the download
  2. Tap again to resume
  3. If still stuck, connect to a strong WiFi network
  4. Try force restarting (Fix 3 above)
  5. If nothing works, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and delete from there
Offload vs Delete: Offloading removes the app but keeps its data (saves, logins, preferences). Reinstalling restores everything. Deleting removes the app AND all data permanently. Choose offload for apps you might use again, delete for apps you want gone.
Tip: While clearing out apps, also clean your camera roll. Photos usually take up more space than any single app. Swype Photo Cleaner makes it easy to review and remove unwanted photos quickly.

Free Up Even More Space

Deleting apps is just the start. Your camera roll is usually the biggest storage consumer. Swype helps you clean it fast.
