Recently Deleted Album on iPhone – How It Works
The Recently Deleted album is a built-in album in the iPhone Photos app that acts as a 30-day safety net for deleted photos and videos. When you delete a photo, it moves to this album and continues to take up storage on your iPhone and in iCloud until it is permanently removed after 30 days or manually emptied.
How the Recently Deleted Album Works
When you delete a photo or video from your iPhone's Photos app, it is not immediately erased. Instead, it moves to the Recently Deleted album, where it stays for 30 days. Each photo in the album displays a countdown showing how many days remain before automatic permanent deletion.
During this 30-day window, you can recover any deleted photo by opening the Recently Deleted album, selecting the photo, and tapping "Recover." The photo will be restored to its original album and location in your library. After 30 days, the photo is permanently and irreversibly deleted.
Storage Impact
This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of iPhone storage: photos in the Recently Deleted album still count toward your storage. Both your local iPhone storage and your iCloud storage (if iCloud Photos is enabled) continue to include these photos until they are permanently deleted.
This is the number one reason why people delete hundreds of photos but see little or no change in their available storage. If you delete photos to free up space, you must also empty the Recently Deleted album to actually reclaim that storage.
Face ID and Touch ID Protection
Starting with iOS 16, Apple added biometric protection to the Recently Deleted album. You must authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to view the contents of this album. This prevents someone who picks up your unlocked phone from seeing photos you have deleted. The same protection also applies to the Hidden album.
How to Empty Recently Deleted
- Open the Photos app
- Go to Albums and scroll down to the Utilities section
- Tap Recently Deleted
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode
- Tap Select, then Delete All (or select individual photos)
- Confirm the permanent deletion
This action cannot be undone. Once you permanently delete photos from the Recently Deleted album, they cannot be recovered by any means.
iCloud Photos and Recently Deleted
If you have iCloud Photos enabled, the Recently Deleted album syncs across all your devices. A photo deleted on your iPhone will also appear in Recently Deleted on your iPad, Mac, and iCloud.com. Permanently deleting it from any device removes it everywhere. Similarly, recovering a photo from Recently Deleted on one device restores it across all devices.
