What Does Optimize iPhone Storage Do?
Optimize iPhone Storage is an iCloud Photos setting that automatically replaces full-resolution photos and videos on your iPhone with smaller, device-sized versions when local storage runs low. The full-resolution originals remain safely stored in iCloud and are downloaded on demand when you view or edit them.
How Optimize iPhone Storage Works
When you enable Optimize iPhone Storage, your iPhone monitors available storage space. When your device starts running low, iOS automatically identifies photos and videos you have not viewed recently and replaces them with lightweight thumbnails. These thumbnails are much smaller than the originals — often just a few kilobytes instead of several megabytes.
The process is entirely automatic and invisible. Your Photos app still displays every photo in your library, organized exactly as before. The only difference is that older photos may take a moment to load at full resolution when you tap on them, because the full-size version needs to be downloaded from iCloud first. Recent photos and frequently viewed images are kept at full resolution.
How to Enable It
Go to Settings > Photos (or Settings > iCloud > Photos on older iOS versions). You will see two options:
- Download and Keep Originals — stores full-resolution copies of every photo on your iPhone
- Optimize iPhone Storage — replaces originals with smaller versions when space is needed
This setting requires iCloud Photos to be turned on. If iCloud Photos is disabled, the Optimize iPhone Storage option will not appear.
