What Does Offload Unused Apps Mean? Definition & Guide

By Jack Smith, iOS Developer at DB Labs · Updated March 8, 2026

Offload Unused Apps is an iPhone setting that automatically removes the app binary of apps you rarely use while preserving all their data, documents, and settings. When you tap an offloaded app, it re-downloads from the App Store and restores exactly where you left off. This can free up several gigabytes without losing any data.

How Offload Unused Apps Works

Every app on your iPhone consists of two parts: the app binary (the actual application code) and the app's data (documents, settings, cached files, login tokens, and saved progress). When you enable Offload Unused Apps, iOS monitors which apps you have not opened recently and, when your storage is running low, removes only the app binary while keeping all the data.

The app's icon stays on your Home Screen with a small cloud symbol next to its name. The next time you tap the icon, iOS automatically re-downloads the app from the App Store and reconnects it with your preserved data. You pick up right where you left off — with all settings, login information, and saved progress intact.

How to Enable Offload Unused Apps

There are two ways to use this feature:

Offloading vs. Deleting Apps

Understanding the difference between offloading and deleting is important:

Offloading is ideal for apps you use occasionally but do not want to lose data from, such as travel apps, seasonal games, or specialty tools. Deleting is better for apps you are certain you will never use again.

How Much Storage Can You Save?

The storage savings vary widely depending on which apps are offloaded. Large games can free 1 to 4 GB each. Social media apps typically free 200 to 500 MB. Smaller utility apps may only free 50 to 100 MB. You can check exactly how much each app uses in Settings > General > iPhone Storage, where iOS shows both the app size (binary) and the documents and data size separately.

On average, most users can reclaim 2 to 5 GB by offloading apps they have not used in months. Combined with clearing the Recently Deleted album and cleaning up photos, this can make a significant dent in storage problems.

Important Considerations

Offloaded apps require an internet connection to re-download. If you are traveling without reliable connectivity, make sure any apps you might need are not offloaded before you leave. Also, if an app is removed from the App Store after you offload it, you will not be able to re-download it — though your data will still be preserved on the device.
