What Is the Object Eraser (Clean Up Tool) on iPhone?
By Jack Smith — Updated March 12, 2026
The Clean Up tool (commonly called the object eraser) is an AI-powered feature in iOS 18 Photos that uses Apple Intelligence to identify and remove unwanted objects, people, or distractions from photos. You circle or tap the element you want removed, and the AI fills in the background seamlessly. The edit is non-destructive — the original photo can always be reverted — and storage impact is minimal since it modifies in place rather than creating a duplicate.
How the Clean Up Tool Works
Open any photo in the Photos app, tap Edit, then select the Clean Up tool (the eraser icon). iOS uses Apple Intelligence to automatically highlight objects it detects as potentially removable — strangers in the background, stray objects, power lines, or other distractions. You can also manually circle, brush over, or tap any element you want removed.
Once you confirm, the on-device generative AI analyzes the surrounding pixels — texture, color, lighting, and perspective — and synthesizes replacement content that blends naturally with the background. The processing runs entirely on the iPhone's Neural Engine, with no data sent to Apple's servers.
What It Can Remove
- People in the background — Strangers, photobombers, or passersby
- Objects — Trash cans, signs, power lines, parked cars, or any visual distraction
- Blemishes and artifacts — Lens spots, sensor dust, or unwanted reflections
- Text and logos — Watermarks, brand logos, or signs in the background
The tool works best on elements that are clearly distinct from the background. Large, complex removals (like a person occupying half the frame) may produce visible artifacts. Small to medium-sized removals typically look seamless.
Storage Impact
The Clean Up tool has minimal storage impact. It saves edits as non-destructive adjustments attached to the original file — similar to how crop, filter, and exposure adjustments work in Photos. The original pixel data is preserved for revert capability, adding typically less than 1 MB of metadata per edited photo. No duplicate file is created.
If you edit hundreds of photos with Clean Up, the cumulative metadata could add up to a few hundred MB, but in practice this is negligible compared to the photos themselves.
Device Requirements
The Clean Up tool requires Apple Intelligence, which runs on:
- iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max
- All iPhone 16 models (including standard 16)
- All iPhone 17 models
Earlier iPhones and the standard iPhone 15 do not support Clean Up. The feature requires iOS 18.1 or later.
