What Is Night Mode on iPhone?
By Jack Smith — Updated March 8, 2026
Night Mode is an iPhone camera feature that automatically activates in low-light conditions. It captures multiple frames over an extended exposure period — anywhere from 1 to 30 seconds — and uses the Neural Engine to align, merge, and denoise them into a single bright, sharp photo that would have been a dark, blurry mess without the technology.
How Night Mode Works
In low light, a single fast exposure produces a dark, noisy image. Night Mode solves this by using a longer exposure and capturing multiple frames throughout it, then applying advanced alignment and merging algorithms. The Neural Engine detects and corrects for hand movement between frames, aligns stationary elements precisely, and applies targeted noise reduction — producing a final image that is substantially brighter, cleaner, and sharper than any single frame could be.
Exposure Duration
The camera automatically determines the optimal Night Mode exposure time based on light levels and how still the camera is held:
- 1–3 seconds: Handheld, moderate low light (dimly lit restaurant, candlelight).
- 3–10 seconds: Very dark scenes, or when the camera is partially steadied.
- Up to 30 seconds: On a tripod, near-total darkness (star photography, light trails).
You can manually override the suggested duration by tapping the Night Mode icon (moon) and dragging the slider. Setting it higher requires holding very still or using a tripod for best results.
Night Mode Tripod Features
When iPhone detects it is on a stable surface (tripod or propped up), it unlocks longer exposure options. In the Camera app with Night Mode, you will see a "Max" option on the slider that allows up to 30-second exposures. Combined with Apple's ProRAW format on Pro models, this opens up creative long-exposure photography — capturing star trails, light paintings, or silky-smooth waterfalls.
Which iPhones Support Night Mode
- iPhone 11 (2019): Night Mode on rear main camera only.
- iPhone 12 Pro / Pro Max: Night Mode on main, front, and Ultra Wide cameras.
- iPhone 13 (all models): Night Mode on all rear lenses and front camera.
- iPhone 14 / 15 / 16 (all models): Night Mode on all cameras, with improved performance on Pro models.
Night Mode and File Size
Night Mode photos are saved as standard HEIC files at full resolution. The long exposure processing happens on-device before saving; only the final merged result is stored. File sizes are comparable to a normal HEIC photo — Night Mode does not significantly increase storage per photo compared to a standard daytime shot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Night Mode exposure last?
From 1 second (handheld, moderate low light) to 30 seconds (tripod, near-total darkness). The camera suggests a duration automatically; you can manually adjust it by tapping the moon icon and using the slider.
Does Night Mode work automatically?
Yes. Night Mode activates when the camera detects low-light conditions — the moon icon appears at the top of the Camera app. You can tap it to adjust exposure duration or disable it.
Which iPhones have Night Mode?
iPhone 11 introduced Night Mode on the rear main camera. iPhone 12 Pro and later extended it to the front and Ultra Wide cameras. iPhone 13 and later have Night Mode on all lenses.
