What Are Memories on iPhone?
Memories is a feature in the iPhone Photos app that automatically creates curated slideshows by analyzing your photo library for significant events, trips, people, and places. iOS uses machine learning to select the best photos, add background music, apply visual themes, and create shareable video montages. Memories appear in the For You tab in Photos and update automatically as you add new photos. You can customize the music, photos, length, and visual style of any Memory.
How Memories Work
iOS continuously analyzes your photo library on-device using machine learning. It identifies clusters of photos based on:
- Location: Photos taken at the same place (a vacation, a restaurant, a landmark).
- Time: Photos from a specific date range (a weekend trip, a holiday).
- People: Photos featuring the same person or group (using Face ID recognition).
- Events: iOS detects events like birthdays, holidays, and seasonal activities.
How to Customize Memories
Open a Memory and tap the screen while it plays. You can:
- Change music: Tap the music icon to pick from suggested tracks or your Apple Music library.
- Change look: Swipe left/right on the filter row to change visual styles.
- Edit photos: Tap the three-dot menu to add or remove specific photos.
- Adjust length: Make the Memory shorter or longer.
- Share: Export as a video file to send via Messages, AirDrop, or social media.
With Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro+), you can create custom Memories by typing a description like "a movie of our beach vacation." See our slideshow creation guide for details.
