What Is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image, video, or display, expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (4:3, 16:9, 1:1, etc.). iPhone shoots photos at 4:3 by default to match the camera sensor and produce maximum resolution. Video defaults to 16:9 widescreen.

Common Aspect Ratios

iPhone Camera Aspect Ratios

The iPhone Camera app offers 4:3, Square (1:1), and 16:9 for photos. The 4:3 setting uses the sensor's full native area and produces the highest resolution image (12 MP on most iPhones, 24 or 48 MP on iPhone 14 Pro and later). Selecting Square or 16:9 in the Camera app crops the sensor's output, reducing resolution. Shoot at 4:3 and crop later in editing if you want the most flexibility.

Aspect Ratio vs Resolution

Aspect ratio describes the shape of an image, while resolution describes the total number of pixels. A 12-megapixel 4:3 photo is 4032×3024 pixels. A 12-megapixel 16:9 photo is 4608×2592 pixels. Both have approximately the same total pixel count but very different shapes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What aspect ratio does iPhone use by default?

4:3, which matches the camera sensor and produces the highest resolution. Square and 16:9 are also available.

Why is 16:9 used for video?

16:9 is the standard widescreen ratio adopted for HDTV and modern displays, matching how we naturally see scenes.

Does changing aspect ratio reduce photo quality?

Yes. Non-4:3 ratios crop the sensor output, throwing away pixels and reducing resolution. Shoot 4:3 and crop later for flexibility.
