What Is Apple Intelligence for Photos? Definition and Guide

Apple Intelligence brings AI-powered features to the Photos app including Clean Up, natural language search, and Memory creation. Learn what it does and which iPhones support it.

What Is Apple Intelligence for Photos?

Apple Intelligence for Photos refers to the suite of AI and machine learning features Apple introduced in iOS 18.1+ that enhance the Photos app. Key features include Clean Up (removing unwanted objects from photos), natural language search (finding photos by describing them), and AI-generated Memories (creating slideshow videos from text prompts). Apple Intelligence processes everything on-device using the Neural Engine, so your photos are never uploaded to Apple's servers for AI processing.

Apple Intelligence Photo Features

Clean Up Tool

The Clean Up tool uses generative AI to remove unwanted objects, people, or distractions from your photos. Tap Edit > Clean Up, then circle or tap the object you want to remove. The AI fills in the background intelligently. It works best for removing small objects against simple backgrounds. Available on iPhone 15 Pro and later.

Natural Language Search

You can now search your photos using natural descriptions like "photos of my dog at the beach" or "sunset pictures from last summer." Apple Intelligence understands the content of your photos through on-device analysis and returns relevant results. This goes beyond basic keyword matching — it understands visual concepts.

AI Memory Creation

Type a description like "a movie of our camping trip" and Apple Intelligence creates a Memory movie with appropriate photos, music, and transitions. It selects the best photos, applies themed editing, and adds a soundtrack.

Supported Devices

Apple Intelligence requires iPhone 15 Pro or later (A17 Pro chip or newer) and iOS 18.1+. Older iPhones, including the standard iPhone 15, do not support Apple Intelligence features. The M-series iPads and Apple Silicon Macs also support these features.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Apple Intelligence in the Photos app?

Apple Intelligence in Photos refers to AI-powered features introduced in iOS 18.1, including the Clean Up tool (which removes unwanted objects from photos using generative AI), natural language search (finding photos by describing them in plain English), and AI-generated Memories (creating slideshow videos from text prompts). All processing happens on-device using the Neural Engine.

Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence requires iPhone 15 Pro or later with the A17 Pro chip or newer, running iOS 18.1 or later. The standard iPhone 15, iPhone 14, and all earlier models do not support Apple Intelligence. On iPad, it requires M1 chip or later. On Mac, it requires Apple Silicon (M1 or later).

Does Apple Intelligence upload my photos to the cloud?

No. Apple Intelligence processes photos entirely on-device using the Neural Engine. Your photos are not uploaded to Apple's servers for AI processing. Some features use Apple's Private Cloud Compute for more complex tasks, which processes data in secure enclaves without Apple having access to the data, but photo features primarily run locally.
