What Is AirDrop? Definition and Guide

AirDrop is Apple's wireless file sharing feature for transferring photos, videos, documents, and more between nearby Apple devices instantly.

What Is AirDrop?

AirDrop is Apple's built-in wireless file-sharing protocol that uses Bluetooth and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi to transfer files between nearby Apple devices. It works between iPhones, iPads, and Macs within approximately 30 feet (9 meters). AirDrop does not require an internet connection, cellular data, or any setup — it transfers files directly device-to-device at speeds up to 20-30 MB/s. Files are encrypted during transfer for security.

How AirDrop Works

AirDrop uses a two-step process. First, it uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to discover nearby devices. When you tap Share and see nearby devices listed, that discovery is happening over Bluetooth. Second, when you select a recipient, AirDrop creates a direct peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection between the two devices for the actual file transfer. This direct connection is why AirDrop is fast — it does not route through a router or the internet.

AirDrop Settings

You can control who can send you files via AirDrop in Settings > General > AirDrop. Three options are available:

  • Receiving Off: No one can see your device via AirDrop.
  • Contacts Only: Only people in your Contacts can see your device. This is the recommended setting for everyday use.
  • Everyone for 10 Minutes: Anyone nearby can see your device. This temporarily opens discovery and reverts to Contacts Only after 10 minutes (added in iOS 16.2).

How to Use AirDrop for Photos

AirDrop is one of the best ways to share photos between Apple devices because it transfers at full quality with no compression.

  1. Open Photos and select the photos you want to share.
  2. Tap the Share button (square with up arrow).
  3. In the AirDrop row at the top of the share sheet, tap the recipient's device.
  4. The recipient sees a preview and taps Accept.
  5. Photos transfer directly to the recipient's Photos app.
Full quality: Unlike sharing via Messages or email, AirDrop transfers photos and videos at their original resolution and quality. No compression, no resolution reduction. A 48MP ProRAW photo transfers at its full 75+ MB size.

AirDrop Tips

  • Batch transfers: You can select and AirDrop hundreds of photos at once, but transfers over 1,000 photos may drop. Send in batches for reliability.
  • Both devices must be awake: The receiving device must have its screen on (not locked) to accept AirDrop transfers.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on: Both must be enabled on both devices, but you do not need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network.
  • Range: AirDrop works best within 30 feet. Walls and obstacles can reduce range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AirDrop and how does it work?

AirDrop is Apple's wireless file-sharing feature that uses Bluetooth for device discovery and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for the actual transfer. It does not require an internet connection. It works between iPhones, iPads, and Macs within about 30 feet of each other at speeds up to 20-30 MB/s.

Is there a file size limit for AirDrop?

There is no official file size limit for AirDrop. You can transfer files of any size, including multi-gigabyte videos. Very large transfers may take several minutes and both devices must stay within range and awake for the entire duration.

Can I AirDrop to Android or Windows devices?

No. AirDrop only works between Apple devices. For cross-platform file sharing, use email, messaging apps, cloud services like Google Drive or Dropbox, or the Nearby Share feature on Android devices.
