Getting Started 6 questions
What is Swype Photo Cleaner?
Swype Photo Cleaner is a free iPhone app made by DB Labs that helps you clean your camera roll quickly using a swipe gesture interface. Swipe left to delete a photo, swipe right to keep it. The app also includes Smart Groups — pre-sorted collections of screenshots, burst photos, screen recordings — so you can tackle the biggest storage offenders first. It's designed to make cleaning 10,000 photos feel fast instead of overwhelming.
How do I download Swype Photo Cleaner?
Swype Photo Cleaner is available free on the Apple App Store. Tap here to open it in the App Store, or search "Swype Photo Cleaner" in the App Store on your iPhone. It's free to download and the core swipe experience is fully unlocked at no cost.
Which iPhones and iOS versions does Swype Photo Cleaner support?
Swype Photo Cleaner requires iOS 16 or later and works on all iPhone models that support iOS 16, including iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 series. It is not available for iPad or Mac. We recommend keeping iOS up to date for the best experience.
Is Swype Photo Cleaner really free?
Yes — the core experience (swiping through your camera roll, using Smart Groups, seeing your freed storage) is completely free with no time limit. There is an optional in-app upgrade that unlocks additional pro features. We will never put a paywall in front of basic photo deletion functionality.
Do I need to create an account to use Swype Photo Cleaner?
No account is required. Open the app, grant photo library access, and start cleaning. There's no sign-up, no email, no subscription required to get started.
How long does it take to clean a large photo library?
Results vary by how decisive you are, but most users report cleaning 1,000–5,000 photos in 15–30 minutes using the swipe interface. Starting with Smart Groups (especially Screenshots) dramatically speeds this up — many users clear 2–5 GB in under 10 minutes just by swiping through their screenshots group.
Privacy & Safety 7 questions
Does Swype Photo Cleaner upload my photos to the internet?
Absolutely not. Every photo operation in Swype Photo Cleaner happens entirely on your iPhone using Apple's PhotoKit framework. No photos, thumbnails, metadata, or any other data is transmitted to our servers or any third-party server. Your photos are yours — they never leave your device.
Is it safe to use a third-party app to delete photos?
Yes, when the app uses Apple's official PhotoKit API (as Swype does). PhotoKit enforces iOS-level safety: all deletions go through the "Recently Deleted" album first, giving you a 30-day window to recover anything. Swype Photo Cleaner cannot permanently delete photos in a single tap — the iOS safety net is always in place. Learn more about how photo cleaner apps work safely.
What data does DB Labs collect?
We collect only anonymous, aggregated analytics (e.g., which features are used, session duration, app version) to improve the app. We do not collect personal information, do not collect or view your photos, and do not use the Advertising Identifier (IDFA). Read our full privacy policy.
What photo library permissions does Swype Photo Cleaner need?
Swype requests access to your photo library (Photos permission on iOS) to display your photos for review and to perform deletions through PhotoKit. You can grant either "Full Access" or "Limited Access" (specific albums). For the best experience we recommend Full Access, but you can change this at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → Swype Photo Cleaner.
Can I accidentally delete an important photo?
It's extremely unlikely to lose a photo permanently. All deletions through Swype go to the iOS "Recently Deleted" album and stay there for 30 days before permanent removal. If you accidentally swipe to delete something important, open the native Photos app → Albums → Recently Deleted → find the photo → Recover.
Does Swype Photo Cleaner work offline?
Yes — Swype Photo Cleaner is fully functional offline. All photo operations happen on-device and don't require an internet connection. (If you use iCloud Photos, syncing deletions to iCloud will happen when you reconnect.)
Is Swype Photo Cleaner safe for children's photos?
Yes. The app treats all photos identically — it has no special access to photos beyond what you grant through the standard iOS Photos permission. There is no AI analysis, face recognition, or content scanning of any kind. All photos are displayed locally and never transmitted.
Features & How It Works 8 questions
How does the swipe interface work?
Swype shows you your photos one at a time (or in groups). Swipe left to delete the current photo. Swipe right to keep it. That's the core loop. You can also tap to zoom in and inspect a photo before deciding. The interface is designed for speed — most people find they can make keep/delete decisions in under a second per photo once they're in a rhythm.
What are Smart Groups?
Smart Groups automatically categorize your photo library by media type: Screenshots, Burst Photos, Screen Recordings, and more. Instead of swiping through your entire camera roll chronologically, you can jump directly into your Screenshots group and clear all 800 of them before moving to Bursts. This targeted approach is far more efficient — screenshots and bursts alone typically account for 50–70% of wasted storage.
Does Swype work with iCloud Photos?
Yes. Swype Photo Cleaner works seamlessly with iCloud Photos. When you delete a photo through Swype, the deletion syncs to iCloud (and across your other Apple devices) just as it would from the native Photos app. This means cleaning with Swype also frees your iCloud storage.
How does the "storage freed" counter work?
The storage counter tracks the total file size of all photos you've swiped to delete during a session. It's a running total displayed in real time as you swipe, showing you MB and GB saved. Note: actual device storage isn't permanently freed until photos are removed from the "Recently Deleted" album (either manually or after 30 days).
Can Swype detect and delete duplicate photos?
Swype Photo Cleaner helps with near-duplicates through the Burst Photos smart group — burst photos are almost always near-identical shots. For exact duplicates, iOS 16 and later has a native Duplicates album in the Photos app. We recommend using both: the native Duplicates album for exact matches, and Swype's burst group for near-duplicate burst shots. See our full guide to deleting duplicates.
Can I delete videos with Swype Photo Cleaner?
Yes. Videos appear in your camera roll alongside photos and can be swiped to delete just like photos. Videos are often much larger (100 MB to several GB each), so deleting videos through Swype can free significant storage quickly.
What happens after I delete photos in Swype?
Deleted photos go to the native iOS "Recently Deleted" album in the Photos app. They stay there for 30 days, during which you can recover them. After 30 days (or if you manually delete from Recently Deleted), they are permanently removed. To immediately free the storage: open Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted → Delete All.
Does Swype Photo Cleaner have a undo button?
Any photos deleted through Swype are recoverable from the iOS "Recently Deleted" album within 30 days — that's your undo. Within the Swype app session, you can also go back to review a photo you've already decided on before finalizing the session.
Storage Questions 5 questions
How much storage can I free up with Swype Photo Cleaner?
Results vary widely by user, but many people report freeing 5–20+ GB from a thorough first cleanup session. Users who've never cleaned their camera roll before, or who have large screenshot collections, tend to see the biggest gains. Screenshots alone average 2–5 MB each — 1,000 screenshots is 2–5 GB.
Why isn't my storage freeing up immediately after deleting photos?
iOS holds deleted photos in the "Recently Deleted" album for 30 days before permanently removing them. The storage isn't released until photos leave Recently Deleted. To free storage immediately after a cleanup: open Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted → Delete All.
Will deleting photos free up iCloud storage too?
Yes, if you use iCloud Photos. Deletions sync to iCloud, and storage is freed from your iCloud quota after photos are permanently removed (either after 30 days in Recently Deleted, or when you manually delete from Recently Deleted). Both device storage and iCloud storage benefit from cleaning your camera roll.
What's the best order to clean for maximum storage savings?
Start with the highest-volume, lowest-regret media types: 1) Screenshots (often 1,000+ items), 2) Burst photos (keep the best, delete the rest), 3) Blurry/dark shots, 4) Long videos you no longer watch, 5) Everything else. Swype's Smart Groups makes this easy — just tap each group in order. See our advanced tips guide.
Should I delete photos or enable "Optimize iPhone Storage"?
Both — they solve different problems. Optimize iPhone Storage (iCloud Photos setting) keeps smaller versions on device and full-res in iCloud — it frees device space without deleting anything, but requires an iCloud plan. Deleting with Swype permanently removes photos you don't want, freeing both device AND iCloud storage. The ideal approach: clean with Swype first (removing junk), then enable Optimize Storage to maximize space for what you keep.
Troubleshooting 4 questions
Swype Photo Cleaner isn't showing all my photos — what's wrong?
This is usually a photo permissions issue. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → Swype Photo Cleaner and make sure it's set to "All Photos" (not "Selected Photos" or "None"). If it's already set correctly, try closing and reopening the app, or restarting your iPhone.
Why is my iPhone storage still showing as full after using Swype?
Deleted photos go to "Recently Deleted" first and still count toward your storage until permanently removed. Open Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted → Delete All to immediately free the storage. If that doesn't fully resolve it, check if large video files or app data are also contributing (Settings → General → iPhone Storage).
The app is slow when loading my large photo library — is this normal?
Loading a very large photo library (20,000+ photos) on the first launch can take a moment as iOS indexes your media. After the initial load, swiping should be smooth. If performance issues persist, ensure your iPhone has at least 500 MB of free storage available for app operation, and close other background apps.
