iPhone 16 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro Storage Compared

The biggest storage change from iPhone 16 Pro to iPhone 17 Pro is the doubled base tier. Here's how they compare at every size.

The Quick Verdict

The biggest change: iPhone 17 Pro starts at 256 GB (up from 128 GB on iPhone 16 Pro), doubling the base storage without increasing the entry price. The upgrade tiers are nearly identical above the base — 512 GB and 1 TB. iPhone 17 Pro Max adds a 2 TB option exclusive to the Max model. If you're shopping for a new iPhone, the 17 Pro base model is a strictly better deal. If you already own iPhone 16 Pro with 256 GB or more, don't upgrade for storage alone — the improvements are minor.

The Doubled Base Tier

Apple's decision to double base storage on iPhone 17 Pro was the biggest surprise of the launch. The $999 starting price stayed the same but you now get 256 GB instead of 128 GB — effectively a $100 upgrade at no cost. This is a response to years of criticism that 128 GB isn't enough for a $1,000 flagship in 2026 with ProRAW, ProRes, and Apple Intelligence requirements.

Photo and Video File Sizes

Both phones use the same 48MP Fusion camera with identical file sizes:

  • HEIC photo: 2-3 MB
  • JPEG photo: 3-5 MB
  • ProRAW: 50-75 MB
  • 4K 30fps video: ~200 MB/min
  • 4K 60fps video: ~400 MB/min
  • ProRes 4K: ~6 GB/min
  • iPhone 17 Pro exclusive: 4K 120fps slow-motion (~1 GB/min)

Apple Intelligence Storage

Both models support Apple Intelligence, which reserves 4-7 GB for on-device ML models. This effectively reduces usable storage by that amount — 256 GB iPhone 17 Pro users have about 248 GB usable. This is the same on iPhone 16 Pro, so it's not a differentiator.

External Recording Support

Both models support ProRes recording to external USB-C SSD. This is critical for pro videographers because 4K ProRes at 6 GB/min fills even 1 TB in under 3 hours. The USB-C port works identically on both generations.

Our recommendation: If you're buying new in 2026, the iPhone 17 Pro 256 GB is the best value. If you already own iPhone 16 Pro 256 GB or higher, skip the upgrade and pay for iCloud or add a USB-C SSD instead.

Upgrade Math

Trade-in iPhone 16 Pro 128 GB nets roughly $600 (varies by condition). iPhone 17 Pro 256 GB costs $999. Net upgrade cost: ~$400 for double the storage, upgraded camera, and Apple Intelligence. Worth it? Probably, if your 128 GB is already full. Otherwise, wait for iPhone 18.
