The Short Answer
Telegram stores downloaded media locally to avoid re-fetching from the cloud. To clear it: Telegram Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage → Clear Telegram Cache. This removes all locally cached media without deleting your messages or chat history — everything remains on Telegram's cloud. Also set a storage usage limit (e.g., 5 GB) so Telegram auto-manages its cache going forward. Disable auto-download in Data and Storage → Automatic Media Download to stop new media from accumulating.
Why Telegram Storage Grows
Telegram caches every photo, video, voice message, and document you receive so that re-viewing it is instant (no re-download required). This is a feature — but it means storage grows with every group chat message, channel post, or shared file.
Users in large Telegram groups or channels (which can have thousands of members posting media constantly) can see Telegram's cache grow to 3-8 GB within weeks of joining. The good news: Telegram gives you much better storage management tools than most other messaging apps.
| Media Type | Storage Impact | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Videos from groups/channels | High (100 MB–1 GB per day in busy channels) | Biggest culprit |
| Photos | Medium (1–5 MB each) | Adds up in photo-heavy groups |
| Voice messages | Low (under 1 MB each) | Usually negligible |
| Documents/files | Variable (can be very large) | PDFs, archives sent in chats |
| Sticker packs | Low (5–20 MB per pack) | Minor contributor |
Use Telegram's Built-In Storage Manager
1 Open Storage Usage
Tap Settings (gear icon at the bottom), then tap Data and Storage, then Storage Usage. You will see a progress bar showing total Telegram storage and a breakdown by media type (Photos, Videos, Files, Music, Voices, Round Videos, Stickers, Avatars).
2 Clear Specific Media Types
Tap any media type category to see which chats are contributing to it and delete selectively. This is more precise than a full clear — if you want to keep photos but remove videos, you can. For each category, tap a chat to see its media, select items, and delete.
3 Clear All Cache at Once
Scroll to the bottom of Storage Usage and tap Clear Telegram Cache. Confirm on the dialog. This removes all cached media in one step. Your message text, chat history, and all media on Telegram's servers remain completely intact.
Set a Storage Limit
Telegram's best storage feature is the automatic storage limit. In Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage, look for Keep Media. Tap it and choose a time period (3 days, 1 week, 1 month) — Telegram will automatically delete locally cached media older than your chosen period.
You can also set a hard cap under Storage Limit: set it to 5 GB or 10 GB. When Telegram approaches the limit, it automatically clears the oldest cached media first. This is the best hands-off option for ongoing management.
Disable Auto-Download to Stop Future Buildup
Go to Telegram Settings → Data and Storage → Automatic Media Download. Here you configure auto-download separately for mobile data and Wi-Fi:
- When using mobile data: Set Photos, Videos, Files, and Voice to Off, or limit Photos to small files only.
- When connected to Wi-Fi: Keep Photos on if you want convenience; disable Videos and large Files to prevent accumulation.
With auto-download off, media only downloads when you tap it — giving you full control over what gets stored locally.
Consider Leaving High-Volume Channels
The single most effective long-term fix is leaving Telegram channels and groups that post enormous amounts of media you do not actively use. A busy news or meme channel can post hundreds of media items per day. Even with auto-download off, simply receiving and rendering the thumbnails contributes to cache size.
Audit your channel list and leave any you do not regularly read. You can always rejoin via a link if you want to check in occasionally.
