The Short Answer
Snapchat stores Memories, lens data, Discover feed content, and chat media locally on your iPhone. To clear it: open Snapchat → tap your profile → Settings (gear icon) → Account Actions → Clear Cache. This removes temporary files without touching your Memories, Streaks, or friends list. For a full reset, delete and reinstall the app — your account and Memories are stored on Snapchat's servers and will return when you log back in.
What Is Snapchat Storing on Your iPhone?
Snapchat's storage footprint has three components. Understanding them helps you clear the right one:
| Component | Typical Size | Lost When Cleared? |
|---|---|---|
| Memories (saved snaps/stories) | 0.5–5 GB | No — stored on Snapchat's servers |
| Cache (lenses, Discover, feed) | 200 MB–2 GB | No — regenerated on use |
| Saved chat media | 100 MB–2 GB | Depends — saved chats persist |
How to Clear Snapchat Cache on iPhone
1 Open Snapchat Settings
Tap your profile icon (Bitmoji or initial) in the top-left corner of the camera screen. Then tap the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Settings.
2 Find Account Actions
Scroll down to the Account Actions section near the bottom of the Settings page. Tap Clear Cache. On the confirmation screen, tap Continue. Snapchat will clear its temporary files immediately.
3 Check the Result
Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Snapchat to see the updated storage figure. The reduction is usually 200 MB to 1 GB for moderate users, and up to 2 GB for heavy Discover and lens users. You will not lose any Memories, Streaks, or chat history.
Manage Memories to Free More Space
If you have hundreds of Memories saved locally, they are taking up significant storage. Memories saved to "Memories Only" are stored locally on your iPhone as well as on Snapchat's servers. To reduce local storage without losing your Memories:
- Open Snapchat and swipe up to access Memories.
- Tap and hold a Memory to select it, then select more using the checkboxes.
- Tap the export icon to save important ones to your iPhone's camera roll, then delete the local copy from Memories if you have too many.
Alternatively, in Snapchat Settings → Memories, you can set the Save Location to Memories & Camera Roll or Camera Roll Only. Using Camera Roll Only means snaps are saved as standard photos you can manage directly in the Photos app — and clean up with Swype Photo Cleaner.
Reduce Snapchat's Ongoing Storage Usage
To keep Snapchat from building up storage again:
- Limit Memories saves: Only save snaps you truly want to keep rather than saving everything by default.
- Clear cache monthly: Make it a habit — Settings → Account Actions → Clear Cache. Takes 5 seconds.
- Reduce Discover browsing: The Discover feed caches video content aggressively. Less Discover time means less cached data.
- Delete old saved chats: In any chat, long-press a saved message and tap Unsave in Chat to remove messages you no longer need saved.
The Fastest Method: Delete and Reinstall
If Snapchat's storage is very large and you want a clean slate, deleting and reinstalling the app is the most effective approach. Everything Snapchat stores locally is wiped. Your account, Memories, friends, Streaks, and chat text are all preserved on Snapchat's servers. When you log back in, everything syncs back.
The only thing you might lose is any unsaved snap you were in the middle of composing, and received unopened snaps may expire normally. Open and respond to any pending snaps before reinstalling.
