Snapchat Storage on iPhone: Clear Cache & Free Space

Snapchat can silently accumulate gigabytes of cache data, Memories, and saved chat media on your iPhone. Here is exactly how to clear it — without losing your Streaks or saved Snaps.

The Short Answer

Snapchat stores Memories, lens data, Discover feed content, and chat media locally on your iPhone. To clear it: open Snapchat → tap your profile → Settings (gear icon) → Account Actions → Clear Cache. This removes temporary files without touching your Memories, Streaks, or friends list. For a full reset, delete and reinstall the app — your account and Memories are stored on Snapchat's servers and will return when you log back in.

What Is Snapchat Storing on Your iPhone?

Snapchat's storage footprint has three components. Understanding them helps you clear the right one:

Component Typical Size Lost When Cleared?
Memories (saved snaps/stories) 0.5–5 GB No — stored on Snapchat's servers
Cache (lenses, Discover, feed) 200 MB–2 GB No — regenerated on use
Saved chat media 100 MB–2 GB Depends — saved chats persist

How to Clear Snapchat Cache on iPhone

1 Open Snapchat Settings

Tap your profile icon (Bitmoji or initial) in the top-left corner of the camera screen. Then tap the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Settings.

2 Find Account Actions

Scroll down to the Account Actions section near the bottom of the Settings page. Tap Clear Cache. On the confirmation screen, tap Continue. Snapchat will clear its temporary files immediately.

3 Check the Result

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Snapchat to see the updated storage figure. The reduction is usually 200 MB to 1 GB for moderate users, and up to 2 GB for heavy Discover and lens users. You will not lose any Memories, Streaks, or chat history.

Note: After clearing the cache, Snapchat may take a moment to reload lenses and the Discover feed the next time you open it. This is normal — it is rebuilding its cache from scratch.

Manage Memories to Free More Space

If you have hundreds of Memories saved locally, they are taking up significant storage. Memories saved to "Memories Only" are stored locally on your iPhone as well as on Snapchat's servers. To reduce local storage without losing your Memories:

  1. Open Snapchat and swipe up to access Memories.
  2. Tap and hold a Memory to select it, then select more using the checkboxes.
  3. Tap the export icon to save important ones to your iPhone's camera roll, then delete the local copy from Memories if you have too many.

Alternatively, in Snapchat Settings → Memories, you can set the Save Location to Memories & Camera Roll or Camera Roll Only. Using Camera Roll Only means snaps are saved as standard photos you can manage directly in the Photos app — and clean up with Swype Photo Cleaner.

Reduce Snapchat's Ongoing Storage Usage

To keep Snapchat from building up storage again:

  • Limit Memories saves: Only save snaps you truly want to keep rather than saving everything by default.
  • Clear cache monthly: Make it a habit — Settings → Account Actions → Clear Cache. Takes 5 seconds.
  • Reduce Discover browsing: The Discover feed caches video content aggressively. Less Discover time means less cached data.
  • Delete old saved chats: In any chat, long-press a saved message and tap Unsave in Chat to remove messages you no longer need saved.

The Fastest Method: Delete and Reinstall

If Snapchat's storage is very large and you want a clean slate, deleting and reinstalling the app is the most effective approach. Everything Snapchat stores locally is wiped. Your account, Memories, friends, Streaks, and chat text are all preserved on Snapchat's servers. When you log back in, everything syncs back.

The only thing you might lose is any unsaved snap you were in the middle of composing, and received unopened snaps may expire normally. Open and respond to any pending snaps before reinstalling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clear Snapchat cache on iPhone?

Open Snapchat, tap your profile icon, tap the gear icon for Settings, scroll to Account Actions, and tap Clear Cache. Confirm by tapping Continue. This removes temporary files and lens data without deleting your Memories, Streaks, or chat history.

Does clearing Snapchat cache delete Memories?

No. Clearing Snapchat's cache does not delete your Memories. Memories are stored on Snapchat's servers. Clearing cache only removes temporary files, lens data, and browsing cache — not your saved snaps or stories.

Why is Snapchat using so much storage on my iPhone?

Snapchat storage grows from Memories saved locally, accumulated cache from lenses and the Discover feed, and saved chat media. Heavy users with many Memories can see 3–8 GB of usage. The cache alone is typically 300–800 MB but can reach 2 GB on devices with heavy use.

Should I delete and reinstall Snapchat to free storage?

Deleting and reinstalling Snapchat removes all local cache data, but your Memories and account data are safe on Snapchat's servers. Log back in and your account, Memories, friends, and Streaks will all be restored from the cloud.
