Quick Answer
You almost never have to trade visible quality for storage on an iPhone. The settings that save the most — HEIC over JPEG, Live Photos off, 1080p instead of 4K, HDR without Keep Normal Photo — are invisible on a phone screen. Real quality loss only begins when you drop below 1080p video or start re-compressing photos that were already compressed.
The Free Wins
Four changes cut storage substantially with no perceptible cost.
- HEIC instead of JPEG — about half the size at equivalent perceived quality. This is a genuinely better codec, not a compromise.
- Live Photos off — halves the size of every still, and you lose only the three-second motion clip.
- Keep Normal Photo off — stops iOS saving a second, non-HDR copy of every HDR shot. Nobody looks at the duplicates.
- HEVC video instead of H.264 — roughly half the size at the same visual result.
Together these roughly halve the rate at which a camera roll grows, and nothing about the photos you view looks different.
Where the Real Trade-Off Sits
Resolution is the honest trade, and it is worth understanding what you actually give up.
4K is 3840×2160. A phone screen is around 1170×2532. Watching 4K footage on the device that recorded it, you are seeing a downscaled version of what was captured. On a television the difference becomes visible, and in editing the extra pixels give you room to crop and stabilise.
So the question is not “is 4K better” but “will this specific clip ever be seen somewhere 4K matters”. For most footage the answer is no, and 1080p/30 at one-sixth the size is the right call.
What 48MP Actually Costs
iPhone 14 Pro onwards can capture 48MP. In HEIC that is around 5 MB; in ProRAW, 75 MB or more. The default, however, is a 24MP or 12MP output that uses the full sensor through pixel binning — which is why iPhone photos in low light look better than the megapixel count suggests.
Shooting full 48MP HEIC is reasonable for landscapes and anything you might print or crop heavily. For everyday photos the binned default is both smaller and frequently better, because binning improves low-light performance.
Compression You Should Refuse
Some ways of saving space genuinely damage photos, and they are worth avoiding.
- Third-party “compressor” apps that re-encode already-compressed JPEGs. Each pass adds artefacts that cannot be undone.
- Messaging apps as an archive. WhatsApp and Messenger aggressively downscale. A photo that has been through them is not a copy of the original.
- Screenshotting photos to make them smaller. You lose metadata and resolution and gain very little.
