Camera Storage at a Glance
The iPhone 17 Pro camera consumes storage at wildly different rates depending on format and settings. A single 48 MP ProRAW photo is 75 MB. A standard HEIF photo is 3-5 MB. ProRes 4K video uses 6 GB per minute while standard HEVC 4K uses 170 MB per minute. Understanding these numbers lets you choose the right settings for each situation and avoid filling your storage unexpectedly.
Photo Storage by Format
- HEIF 12 MP (default): 1.5-3 MB per photo — Most storage efficient, great quality
- HEIF 24 MP: 3-5 MB per photo — Good balance of quality and size
- HEIF 48 MP: 5-8 MB per photo — Maximum detail in compressed format
- JPEG 12 MP: 3-6 MB per photo — Compatible but larger than HEIF
- ProRAW 12 MP: 25 MB per photo — Full editing flexibility
- ProRAW 48 MP: 75 MB per photo — Maximum quality, massive files
At 48 MP ProRAW, 100 photos consume 7.5 GB. At standard HEIF, the same 100 photos use just 300 MB — a 25x difference. For format details, see our article on ProRAW vs HEIC vs JPEG.
Video Storage by Settings
- 1080p 30fps HEVC: ~60 MB/minute
- 1080p 60fps HEVC: ~90 MB/minute
- 4K 24fps HEVC: ~135 MB/minute
- 4K 30fps HEVC: ~170 MB/minute
- 4K 60fps HEVC: ~400 MB/minute
- 4K 30fps ProRes: ~6 GB/minute
- 4K 60fps ProRes: ~12 GB/minute
ProRes video is designed for professional editing workflows. One hour of 4K ProRes footage would consume 360 GB — more than the base storage of any iPhone. For detailed video storage planning, see our video storage guide.
Special Feature Storage
Cinematic Mode
Cinematic Mode shoots at 4K 30fps with depth data for the focus effects. Each minute uses approximately 200 MB — slightly more than standard 4K due to the depth map data stored alongside the video.
Spatial Video
Spatial video for Apple Vision Pro shoots from dual cameras simultaneously. Each minute of spatial video consumes approximately 130 MB at 1080p. While smaller per minute than 4K, spatial videos add up quickly if you shoot frequently.
Live Photos
Each Live Photo includes a 3-second video clip alongside the still image. This roughly doubles the storage compared to a regular photo — about 3-7 MB per Live Photo in HEIF. Over thousands of shots, this adds up. Consider disabling Live Photos for casual shooting to save 50% on photo storage.
Recommended Settings by Use Case
- Casual daily photos: HEIF 12 MP, Live Photos off — ~2 MB each
- Social media content: HEIF 24 MP, 1080p video — best size/quality ratio
- Family memories: HEIF 24 MP, 4K 30fps — great quality, reasonable size
- Professional work: ProRAW 48 MP, ProRes 4K — maximum quality, bring external storage
Regardless of which camera settings you use, cleaning your camera roll regularly is essential. Use Swype Photo Cleaner to remove blurry shots, duplicates, and test photos after each shoot.
