Instagram Cache on iPhone: How to Clear & Free Storage

Instagram quietly builds a 2-5 GB cache of Reels, feed posts, and Stories on your iPhone. There is no clear-cache button — but there is an easy fix. Here is exactly what to do.

The Short Answer

Instagram does not provide a clear-cache button on iPhone. The only way to clear Instagram's cache is to delete the app and reinstall it. This recovers 1-4 GB of cached Reels and feed content. Your account, posts, followers, and DMs are all safe on Instagram's servers — nothing is lost. Before reinstalling, delete any drafts you do not need, as those are stored locally and will not survive the reinstall.

What Instagram Stores on Your iPhone

Instagram's storage is broken into two categories: the app itself (around 200-400 MB) and its local data. The local data includes:

  • Feed and Explore cache: Photos and videos Instagram pre-loads as you scroll, so the next post appears instantly. This is the biggest contributor — heavy scrollers can accumulate 2-4 GB.
  • Reels cache: Instagram pre-loads Reels before you reach them to enable seamless playback. Each Reel clip is 10-50 MB. Scroll through 30 minutes of Reels and you have cached 300-1,000 MB.
  • Stories cache: Stories from accounts you follow are pre-loaded when you open the app.
  • Drafts: Locally stored unposted photos and videos. These are permanently deleted if you delete the app.
  • DM media: Photos and videos received in Direct Messages and not explicitly saved.

Check Instagram's Storage Usage

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Instagram. You will see App Size and Documents & Data listed separately. Documents & Data is the cache. If it is over 1 GB, a reinstall will recover noticeable space. If it is over 3 GB, a reinstall is strongly recommended.

How to Clear Instagram Cache (The Right Way)

1 Save Any Important Drafts First

Drafts are stored locally. Before deleting Instagram, open the app, go to your profile, tap the + icon, tap Post, and tap Drafts. Export any drafts you want to keep by saving them to your Photos app. Once you delete Instagram, drafts are gone permanently.

2 Delete Instagram

Long-press the Instagram icon on your home screen, tap Remove App, then tap Delete App. This removes the app and all its local data — the entire cache, drafts, and temporary files. Your account on Instagram's servers is completely untouched.

3 Reinstall and Log Back In

Open the App Store, search for Instagram, and reinstall it. Log in with your credentials. Your feed, followers, posts, saved collections, and DMs are all exactly as you left them. The app starts with zero cache and will build it up gradually as you use it.

Tip: After reinstalling, avoid scrolling Reels for extended periods immediately — this rebuilds the cache fastest. If storage is tight, use Instagram in shorter sessions to keep the cache smaller.

Delete Drafts to Save Storage

If you post frequently on Instagram, old drafts can pile up. Each draft video can be 50-200 MB. To manage them without deleting the app:

  1. Tap the + icon in Instagram, then tap Post.
  2. In the photo picker at the top, tap Drafts.
  3. Tap Manage in the top-right corner.
  4. Select the drafts you want to delete and tap Discard.

Reduce Instagram's Cache Going Forward

Instagram will always rebuild its cache as you use the app. To slow this down:

  • Use Instagram less on mobile data — set Instagram to only auto-play videos on Wi-Fi: Instagram Settings → Videos and Audio → toggle off "Auto-play on mobile data."
  • Offload instead of delete — if you want to preserve drafts but free cache, try Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Instagram → Offload App. This may recover some cache space while keeping your local data intact, though it is less effective than a full reinstall.
  • Reinstall every 3-6 months as part of a routine storage cleanup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clear Instagram cache on iPhone?

Instagram does not have a built-in cache-clear button on iPhone. The most effective method is to delete the app and reinstall it. This wipes all cached data, typically recovering 1-4 GB. Your account, posts, and followers are restored from Instagram's servers when you log back in.

How much storage does Instagram use on iPhone?

Instagram typically uses 200–500 MB for the app itself, plus 1–4 GB of cache. Total Instagram storage on a regularly used iPhone is often 2–5 GB. Heavy Reels scrollers can see more than 5 GB.

Will I lose anything if I delete and reinstall Instagram?

No — except for drafts, which are stored locally. Your posts, followers, following list, DMs, and saved collections are on Instagram's servers and return when you reinstall and log in. Save any drafts you need before deleting the app.

Do Instagram drafts take up iPhone storage?

Yes. Drafts are stored locally on your iPhone, not on Instagram's servers. Each draft video post can be 50–200 MB. Delete them via the + icon → Post → Drafts → Manage to free space without reinstalling the app.
